Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University's academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities.

Detailed Position Information
The College of Engineering at the University of Alabama invites applications for a number of tenure track faculty positions with a focus on water sensing. We particularly seek candidates in all engineering areas that complement and enhance our major water initiatives sponsored by NOAA and USGS that are advancing the next generation of hydrologic modeling and water observation systems with emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and decision science. Candidates working in other areas related to water resources and quality research are also of interest. The anticipated start date is August 2023.

The following research areas are particular priorities for some of the positions available through this current search.

Big Data and Advanced Computing - The data revolution is leading to exciting opportunities at the interface of computer science, data science, and domain science. This position seeks applicants with demonstrated excellence innovating new computational and machine learning approaches for large-scale modeling applications. We are interested in applicants with research interests and expertise bridging computer science, data-driven modeling, and process-based modeling of hydrologic systems for improving streamflow, flood, drought, or water quality forecasting. Candidates of particular interest will have demonstrated research strength in extreme data management, visualization and analytics of high dimensional data, artificial intelligence, and high-performance and cloud computing.

Sensor Technologies and Observation Systems - This position requires specialization in applied hydrologic sciences including water quality with expertise in field studies applying Internet of Things (IoT) concepts using sensing technologies, wireless sensor networks, and robots. The ideal candidate will align with the rapid digitalization of the water sector that is driving research in smart systems, real-time control, and edge computing. Applicants should complement University of Alabama expertise in water modeling, hydroinformatics, computer science, and existing sensor technology and observation system researchers in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. The position seeks applications with research interests and expertise integrating satellite and drone-based remote sensing with fixed and mobile sensor networks for water security and resilience applications. The position may bring expertise in related areas of image processing, geospatial and statistical analysis, data fusion, and machine learning.

Outstanding candidates at all levels in other water research areas will also receive full consideration.

Joint appointments across different departments within the College, as well as joint appointments with other departments in other colleges across the University are possible as appropriate. An earned Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering, computer science, or closely related field before the starting date is required. Strong communication skills, interdisciplinary team science experience, and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary.

All departments in the College of Engineering offer ABET/EAC accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in multiple relevant sub-disciplines. At the graduate level, the departments offer Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The departments also support dual-degree graduate programs, such as the joint MSCE/MBA and joint MSCE/JD.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in electrical and computer engineering or a relevant engineering, computer science, or closely related field from an accredited institution.

Applicants must have demonstrated the ability to develop an externally-funded research program and produce scholarly publications in refereed and other professional journals and conferences; demonstrated the ability to effectively collaborate with other faculty, especially across disciplines; exhibited the potential for excellence in teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; and be committed to departmental, college, university, and professional service. Applicants must also meet all university criteria for appointment to the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Preferred Qualifications
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

* Have a demonstrated record of high-quality research and scholarly publications that is recognized nationally.

* Significant record of scholarship in a department with undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

* Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.

* A strong record of both external grant funding and scholarship as demonstrated through refereed journal publications, and professional service.

Instructions and Required Materials for Application
Application packages should consist of a cover letter, CV, a detailed statement of research interests and plans, a statement of teaching interests, and contact information for at least four references. The cover letter should state which level of position the applicant is applying for and which research priority areas the application feels their research interests fit within.

Questions about the application process may be submitted at https://cce.eng.ua.edu/about/contact-us/. Applications will be accepted and reviewed continuously until the positions are filled with an expected start date of August 16, 2023.
