Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Vascular Access Specialist will assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care needs of adult patients requiring vascular access. They provide the most clinically appropriate access, including ultrasound guided peripheral IVs, midlines, and PICCs, consistent with evidenced based practice in collaboration with the inter-professional team. The vascular access expert will support best (vascular access) practice through consultation, collaboration, and education of the bedside care teams. The Vascular Access Specialist will audit dressings and assist with changes as needed. Under the direction of Nursing Leadership, assists with trouble shooting vascular access issues and provides expert guidance to team members with the management of these devices. Employs the concepts of evidence-based practice and an interdisciplinary approach in all aspects of a patient's plan of care.
Complies with all Eskenazi Health policies and procedures and maintains practice within the Indiana Nurse Practice Act or Paramedic Scope of practice.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Communicates effectively and appropriately to patients, family and other health care providers.
• Provides patient education about the PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs insertion and the care and maintenance issues post insertion.
• Demonstrates ability to assess patient past and current medical history including laboratory values, venous and muscle skeletal status that is pertinent in qualifying a patient as a candidate for PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs. placement.
• Assures physicians order on chart for PICC (or midline
• Assures Informed Consent has been obtained.
• Performs time out; correct patient identifier prior to initiating PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs.
• Demonstrates ability to perform PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs. placement maintaining aseptic technique utilizing measures that prevent patient discomfort and trauma related to procedure.
• Demonstrates high level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access devices.
• Maintains clinical competency by inserting a minimum of six PICCs/year and by performing one observed successful PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs.
• Documents insertion of PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs.
• Provides facility nurses/staff instructions about the patient's PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs care and other vascular devices.
• Provide daily inpatient rounds to meet with and support Nursing staff caring for patients with PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs.
• Is responsible for the fiscal viability of the Vascular access program by entering the charges for the insertion, proper usage of equipment, and productive use of time.
• Assists with data collection and monitoring or infection rates related to PICCs (or midline) and US guided PIVs.
• Participates in performance improvement activities by providing information about each PICC (or midline), US guided PIVs to the facility staff as requested.

Job Requirements

• Registered Nurse with current Indiana License preferred. Licensed Paramedic in the state of Indiana
• Minimum 3 years placing peripheral IV lines or obtaining venous access in an acute care setting.
• PICC Line insertion experience preferred.
• ACLS & BLS certification maintained.
• Vascular Access Certification obtained within 18 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Must be certified in basic cardiac life support.
• Knowledge and experience in basic computer skills preferred.
• Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritization skills.
• Must have effective verbal, written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
