Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is a prestigious community of performers that shares its unique blend of musicality, showmanship, and charisma with diverse audiences on campus, across the country, and around the world. Founded in 1862, the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club is the oldest student performing arts group at Penn and one of the oldest glee clubs in the nation. Its rich musical history and timeless performance style makes the Glee Club a treasured tradition of the University. For over 160 years, it has served as the University's unofficial musical ambassador, bringing communities together and enriching the lives of its members immeasurably.

The ensemble is made up of roughly forty SATB singers, 2-3 accompanists, a ten-piece pit band, and a ten-person full-service technical crew. Student and alumni boards govern the Glee Club under the auspices of Platt Student Performing Arts House. In accordance with the mission of the organization and in collaboration with the governing boards, the Director is the fixed face of the organization and leader of the Glee Club's creative endeavors.

Job Description

The responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspire members to deliver excellent and meaningful performances, guiding them to improve as performers with special attention to musicality, vocal technique, repertoire context, and other performance elements.
  • Create and implement the artistic vision of the organization alongside the Glee Club Board of Governors and the Glee Club Graduate Club Board.
  • Participate in weekly Glee Club Board meetings, assisting in the administrative aspects of running the Glee Club such as planning performances and events, acquiring musical scores, and fostering external relations.
  • Participate in Glee Club Graduate Club Board meetings and maintain an appropriate relationship and level of outreach with the Club's alumni.
  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner at all official Club events.
  • Plan and execute effective, enjoyable, and engaging rehearsals throughout the year.
  • Provide members with opportunities to learn about and perform a wide range of musical genres and styles.
  • Select and work with a student music staff including student conductors, section leaders, and accompanist(s) in repertoire selection and rehearsal planning and execution.
  • Conduct the Glee Club in on- and off-campus performances (unless otherwise agreed on in consultation with the student conductors and undergraduate Board);
  • Establish and develop meaningful relationships with the University of Pennsylvania community and beyond, maintaining the group's high reputation as the University's unofficial musical ambassador.
  • Reinforce the sense of brotherhood among Glee Club members by being present as an advisor and mentor to members of the Glee Club.
  • Learn, lead, and uphold the Glee Club's many and varied traditions, both musical and non-musical;
  • Hold weekly office hours for at least 2 hours.
  • Record and release an album every other academic year.
  • Direct the Band in accompanying the group in rehearsals and performances.
  • Work with the Technical Crew to ensure the success of all performances.


Expected engagement with this position is approximately 15 hours a week, with much greater commitments expected during high-volume periods, including auditions, show weeks, travel weekends, and annual concert tours.

The successful candidate will meet the following expectations:
  • 3-5 years of experience leading vocal ensembles.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach a wide variety of musical genres and styles.
  • Willingness to work cooperatively with production directors, Platt Student Performing Arts House staff, University leadership, and student/alumni boards.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Experience working in a university setting.
  • Higher Education in Music (or equivalent experience).


Details of the Position:
  • Position reports to Director of Platt Student Performing Arts House, but is also responsible to the Glee Club student and alumni boards.
  • This is typically a 10-month contracted employee of The University of Pennsylvania Glee Club.
  • Average 10-15 hours per week, except during high-volume periods, including shows and tours;
  • Affiliated staff of The University of Pennsylvania.
  • Start date approximately July 15, 2024 - with an end date of June 30, 2025 with the possibility of renewal annually.
  • This is a temporary term position that pays $24/hour.
