The Mine Geologist is responsible for field mapping at multiple underground room and pillar limestone mines, supervising ground control practices, assisting mine ventilation practices, and providing geological expertise to our production management team in order to ensure a safe and productive working environment for all employees.These duties include drilling, borescoping and stratigraphically logging holes in the ceiling of the mine, geophysical/ Lidar surveys, assisting with PLS mine surveys, mine ventilation surveys, mine map updates, assisting in ground support installations including project management duties, scheduling preventive maintenance on ventilation systems, as well as any other ground control techniques and methods needed to ensure overall adherence to corporate underground mine standards. Key objectives include adherence to safety standards and project expectations as well as sedimentological/ stratigraphic geologic interpretation to assist mine production.

Essential Functions:

  • Regularly perform borehole drilling in the mine roof, borescoping and stratigraphic logging, and geologic field mapping as the primary methods of underground geologic due diligence.
  • Organize, interpret, and input geologic data into Microsoft Excel format to aid in building geologic models for underground mine planning.
  • Required to utilize/ learn AutoCAD software for mine mapping and to utilize PLS survey data as part of geologic analysis.
  • Required to utilize/ learn Carlson Software to assist in underground mine planning.
  • Responsible for assisting with regular PLS mine surveys, as well as internal ventilation surveys as needed.
  • Assist with above ground geologic due diligence such as core logging and/ or geophysical diligence such as 2D and 3D seismic survey.
  • Operate and interpret ground penetrating radar and Lidar for geologic and engineering investigations.
  • Install, maintain, and monitor ground convergence instrumentation.
  • Must be able to function as a project manager for ground support projects by coordinating between site staff, management, and contractors.
  • Hold and lead quarterly ground control meetings to clearly communicate findings and progress with site, District, and Division management and to provide recommendations pertinent to miner safety and mine planning initiatives.
  • Regularly present, educate, and train site personnel on ground control matters.
  • Promote Martin Marietta's safety culture and actively participate in any and all safety initiatives including internal safety audits.
  • Must have an understanding of MSHA regulations and assist with compliance and issues as they arise.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

  • Work Environment:

    This job operates in a production mining environment at an underground limestone mine and regularly involves the operation of heavy equipment such as manlifts and mining drills. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

    Physical Demands:

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from ground to waist, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity, repetitive motion, standing, sitting (must be able to sit for extended periods of time up to 8 hours), walking, climbing stairs, bending and stooping, and the ability to drive.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This is a full-time salaried position that regularly requires long hours and occasional weekend work.

    Travel:

    Travel will be required as needed to job sites within the area of responsibility.

    Required Education and Experience:
  • High School degree
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, or Geological Engineering
  • Skillful and effective communicator with strong presentation skills
  • Leadership and management experience
  • Excel, Microsoft Office proficiency

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Underground Mine Experience.
  • A strong understanding or background in Carbonate Sedimentology and Stratigraphy and geologic structure.
  • A basic understanding of the principles of practical Rock Mechanics.
  • AutoCAD, Carlson mine planning software experience is preferred.
  • LiDAR, Remote sensing, GPR, downhole logging, or experience with geophysical techniques and hydrology is a plus.
