Position Summary

The Office of the Dean of Students is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. The Office of the Dean of Students promotes student growth and leadership development through teaching, advising and intentional personal interactions. The Office of the Dean of Students staff encourages and facilitates opportunities for students to connect and engage in the campus community while striving to provide a safe and inclusive campus environment. In addition, the office supports the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students in serving as Liaison to the College of Education for the purposes of coordinating Graduate Student Assistants and Graduate Interns from the Masters' Degree in Postsecondary Educational Leadership, Specialization in Student Affairs.

Within the Center for Commuter Life, the Transfer Commuter Student Success Coach assists with providing consultation, guidance, mentorship, leadership, support, and coordination, through programming and advising efforts, to potential and current transfer students in Commuter Student Success Programs. The incumbent also assists with developing and supporting co-curricular opportunities, events, and programs in the Commuter Resource Center to enhance student engagement, pride, and sense of community, with a focus on transfer student sense of belonging.

The Transfer Commuter Student Success Coach will possess proficient skills necessary to successfully complete program-related tasks or projects assigned by the appropriate administrator. The incumbent will possess the knowledge and ability to provide back-up generalist support to other advisors within the department, including the Center for Student Organizations & Activities, Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life, the Glazer Center for Leadership & Service, and programs that support retention, academic excellence and enhance graduation rates. The Transfer Commuter Student Success Coach will work evenings and weekends as a routine part of this position.

    Full-time, benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some evening work hours.

    This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

    Education and Experience

    Experience: Possession of the knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

    Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    Specialized Skills
    • One year of experience working with commuter and/or transfer students.
    • One year of experience in working with diverse student populations.
    • One year of experience advising and/or counseling students in an academic and/or co-curricular setting.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or a related field.
    • Familiarity with academic advising practices.
    • Organizational and programming skills.
    • Effective interpersonal skills required to build and maintain cooperative working relationships among diverse individuals and groups.
    • Ability to interpret and apply a wide variety of programs and University policies and guidelines.
    • Basic experience in program development of student organizations and activities, fraternity and sorority life, leadership programs, cross-cultural center, and student academic success centers preferred.
    • Ability to effectively use EAB Navigate, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Applications to create and analyze reports, manage data, resource materials and presentations.
    • Ability to speak before all groups of students and possess the skills necessary to deal with sensitive and confidential issues.
    • Ability to work evenings and weekends

    Compensation and Benefits

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

    SDSU Vaccine Policy

    In accordance with the California State University system wide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

    The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
