The Tool and Equipment Designer is responsible for the design of machines and fixtures from a conceptual level to production. The Tool and Equipment Designer designs and details fixtures, machines, and systems, while also coordinating materials and equipment to meet schedules and deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and detail manufacturing fixtures and equipment using Pro-E (Creo) software.
  • Develop hardware and equipment solutions in a lean manufacturing and JIT environment.
  • Create and generate documentation for projects, including but not limited to drawings, flow charts, schematics, logic flows, and layouts.
  • Responsible for rigorous project management from first order, vendor scheduling, in house manufacturing, and first production runs.
  • Prepares technical specifications and works with internal customers to ensure that the specifications, measurements, fit, and construction are in keeping with the product brief.
  • Assist in developing panel layouts, wiring, component specifications, and interfacing HMI systems.
  • Lead team meetings and design reviews.
  • Provide input to process improvements in production problem solving.
  • Support APQP efforts, including validation, qualification, and PPAP work.
  • Develop and execute plans for upgrades to process equipment in support of customer and PFMEA initiatives.
  • Provide training for operators, supervisors, managers, and maintenance personnel in the areas of machine operation, troubleshooting, and safety.

Job Requirements
Critical Competencies
  • Direct knowledge of modern fabrication, assembly, and machining techniques.
  • Strong GD&T, drafting, detailing, and related CAD skills.
  • Ability to read manufacturing blueprints, wiring schematics, and understand relay ladder logic.
  • Knowledgeable with mechanical principles, machining practices, and metal properties.
  • Able to mentally visualize and comprehend manufacturing equipment or tooling problems, understand the interrelationships of factors affecting a given situation, and be attentive to detail.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing principles including SMED and standard work.
  • Understanding of advanced manufacturing, design, and quality standards.
  • Ability to set and balance priorities appropriately with a focus on the critical few.
  • Must be adaptable to change in order to analyze both successes and failures for continuous improvement.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • S. Engineering Degree preferred or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience and/or certifications in related disciplines.
  • Electrical experience preferred. (circuitry, schematics, integration, PLCs).
