Position Summary:Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides services designed to improve academic, career, and personal skills to prepare first-generation (neither parent has a four-year degree) and low-income high school students to be successful in high school and college.
The Summer Instructor will be responsible for assisting students in enhancing their skills in all subject areas that will prepare 9th -12th grade students for their current academic classes, and the SAT/ACT exams. The Summer program prepares students for the upcoming academic year as they strengthen vital academic skills. Classes being offered will include Math, Science, English, Foreign Languages, Business, Drama, History, Graphic Arts, Photography, Video Production, Music Production.
Reports to the Director or Coordinator, TRiO Upward Bound
Essential Responsibilities:1. Provide syllabus and lesson plans
2. Assist students in the development of study skills necessary for successful completion of courses.
3. Maintain accurate and current documentation concerning student contact and progress.
4. Maintain contact with Upward Bound staff.
5. Refer students to Upward Bound staff for information or assistance with issues such as academic (advisement, juggling family, work and school, stress and time management, self-esteem and independence, study skills), career exploration, and transfer assistance.
6. Conduct tutoring sessions in designated areas for scheduled time periods.
7. Attend mandatory trainings.
8. Other duties as reasonably assigned by Upward Bound staff.
1. A Bachelor's degree in the discipline or in a related discipline and secondary teaching credentials and/or a master's degree in subject matter taught.
2. Must have the ability to work effectively with academically and socioeconomically disadvantage students.
3. Strong oral and written communication skills and be responsible and flexible.
4. Instructors must verify that they are qualified to teach specific disciplines.
Temporary Summer Instructors will teach one or more courses, starting June 17 and ending July 24. The classes will meet between 9:00am to 1:00pm (Monday - Wednesday).
Salary:$50 per hour
