The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Sociology starting in August 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits.

Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Teaching Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., to Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability. The successful candidate will contribute to the Department's on-campus undergraduate major and minor in Criminology, with an emphasis on online courses serving the minor. The teaching load is 8 courses or course equivalents per academic year.

The successful candidate will have 1) a Ph.D. or equivalent in Sociology, Criminology, or a closely related field by time of appointment; 2) demonstrated ability or potential to teach and develop online courses in one or more of the following areas: Crime/Victimization; Law and Society; Intersectionality and Crime; Gender and Crime; Corrections, Recidivism, and Reentry; Race/Ethnicity and Crime; Restorative and Transformative Justice; Comparative and Global Criminology; Media and Crime; Immigration; and Public Policy; 3) strong potential for outstanding contribution to the Department's undergraduate teaching mission; 4) strong methodological skills (qualitative and/or quantitative).

The WVU Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers B.A. programs in sociology, criminology, and anthropology and has over 600 majors. The Department also offers a PhD in sociology, which includes specializations in four broad areas: crime, law, and deviance; inequality, diversity, and equity; social psychology and group processes; and religion. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is home to many scholars who contribute broadly to the area of social justice in research, teaching, public engagement, and activism. The Department recently established an Anti-racism Committee, which initiated an anti-racism undergraduate course and is developing a broad array of programs to diversify the department and curriculum. The Department also houses the Research Center on Violence, the Survey Research Center, the Religion and Society Research Group, the West Virginia Environment and Society Lab, and the Archaeology Lab.

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area.
