Posted Job TitleSupervisor - Cage Wash Smilow 6Job Profile TitleSupervisor, HusbandryJob Description SummaryProvides supervision of Smilow 6 Cage Wash area including but not limited to the scheduling of work duties: supervision of work production and cage wash tasks with daily direction. Utilizing the quality performance worksheets, the facility supervisor will review and perform quality assessments of cage wash personnel work performance throughout the cage wash area. Interfaces with husbandry and investigator personnel to troubleshoot problems, issues and customer service concerns of a routine nature. Provide training on all relevant cage wash SOP's and guidelines to all cage wash staff, new and existing. Perform Cage Wash duties as needed.
Responsible for reporting of routine maintenance items to Penn Facilities and ensuring they are placed in the maintenance log and the log is kept up to date. May act as the functional manager in absence of the manager.

Provides daily care and maintenance of all mechanical cage wash equipment areas required for the health and cleanliness of research animals and their housing facilities in accordance with established procedures and schedules which adhere to State and Federal regulations and AAALAC guidelines

ULAR provides essential 24/7 services for the University of Pennsylvania. The Supervisor - Cage Wash Smilow 6 position is designated as "essential" and you are expected to work when normal campus operations are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting ULAR. In addition, you may be expected to work outside of your regular schedule during peak activity periods (e.g.: overtime, weekends). To the extent possible, managers will provide timely notice of modified work schedules.Job Description

Principal Position Responsibilities/Duties:

Supervise the daily cage wash activities of personnel assigned to the cage wash area, providing direction as needed.

  • This includes the processing of all caging material through mechanical cage, rack and tunnel washers; oversees cage staging and autoclaving of all caging material and related equipment.
  • Monitors the operation levels of all cage wash equipment. Trouble shoots equipment failures or decreased productivity ofequipment
  • Maintains oversight of the bedding systems including the automatic bedding dispensing unit and bedding supply unit. Ensures adequate bedding material and replaces bedding bags as needed. Monitors dust collection filters and replace as needed. Provide routine maintenance of the vacuum bedding disposal systems. Trouble shoots and repairs routinemalfunctions.
  • Consult with Manager for all disciplinary action regarding cage washstaff.

Interface with Cage Wash manager

Cage wash supervision, maintenance, training and support for cage wash areas outside of the TRC6 vivarium.

Report routine maintenance repairs to Penn Facilities and follow up to ensure completion. Enter all repairs into the maintenance log and keep log up to date.

Assist in the ordering of feed, bedding and supplies in support of animal facility. Oversee receiving of shipments, checking manifests for accuracy, and correctly storing of supplies.

Interface with research staff to troubleshoot and resolve simple problems and perform customer service related to Cage wash and equipment needs

Truck Driving responsibilities and backup.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Associates degree plus 3-5 years' experience in lab animal facility or equivalent combination of education and experience; AALAS certification at the ALAT level or higher. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Extensive knowledge of animal husbandry; knowledge of regulations related to animal husbandry; knowledge of computer software packages; good oral and written communications skills; demonstrated customer service skills; ability to lift repetitively up to 50 lbs; ability to stand for long periods; ability to work weekends and holidays.; Driver's License required; position is considered essential personnel.

Position requires: Ability to read, write and comprehend English. Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions. Ability to explain problems/issues/solutions. Must be service oriented and able to work as a team member. Able to repetitively lift 50 lbs. Ability to stand for long periods. Must pass pre-employment physical examination before starting work. Ability to work weekends/holidays/overtime as required. May be required to pass FBI background check. Computer skills a plus.
