Job Description

The WNET Group College Internship Program:

The WNET Group creates inspiring media content and meaningful experiences for diverse audiences nationwide. It is the nonprofit parent company of New York's THIRTEEN - America's flagship PBS station - WLIW21, THIRTEEN PBSKids, WLIW World and Create; Long Island's only NPR station WLIW-FM; and ALL ARTS, the arts and culture media provider. The WNET Group also operates NJ PBS, New Jersey's statewide public television network, and newsroom NJ Spotlight News.

As an intern, you will gain valuable experience at a company that has a rich history in public television broadcasting and production on-air, online and via mobile technology, as well as being a leader in the adoption of new media. The WNET Group offers opportunities for currently matriculating undergraduate and graduate students in a diverse range of areas including educational programming and outreach, news and public affairs, culture and arts, documentaries and production for the internet and related distribution platforms.

Students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university (proof of enrollment required in the form of a current Student ID card, college transcript or registration document). The WNET Group is a national leader among public media companies and can provide you with experience to complement and enhance your academic program.

Departmental Objectives:

WNET's Kids' Media & Education department creates inspiring, educational programming that has a positive impact on the lives of diverse children and their parents, caregivers, and teachers. Through on-air, online, and community projects we spark imagination, encourage critical thinking, and reflect diverse perspectives. The Department's activities include production of television and digital series for kids and youth (i.e., Cyberchase, Mission US); creation of classroom materials and curriculum to support programming; development of educational projects and products; partnerships with daycare centers, schools, afterschool programs, and cultural organizations; and professional development workshops and events for educators and families, including youth media and engagement, to support use of WNET's programming.

Description of Duties:

  • A part-time intern is needed at WNET to provide support for Kids' Media and Education projects. This is an exciting opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience and career skills while working within a public media company and across a range of media-based educational projects.
  • Interns will develop an understanding of the public media sector, current topics and issues in education, and will also have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions towards WNET's mission of providing media with impact.
  • Responsibilities include: Education-related research, editorial support for on-line media and print content (e.g., our education blog and PBS LearningMedia), social media, evaluation support, and general administrative duties for department projects.

Qualifications/Educational Pre-Requisites/Special Skills Required of the Candidate:
  • Detail-oriented, organized, ability to work both on a team and independently.
  • Willingness to learn, think creatively, and strategically - "Can-Do" attitude absolutely essential!
  • Basic knowledge of social media and CMS platforms is a plus.

Opportunity Profile:

There will be opportunities for involvement in creative brainstorming and strategy in terms of current and future education projects for the Kids' Media & Education department.

Schedule:
  • Summer term is June 6, 2022 to August 5, 2022
  • Up to 24 hours per week. Days will depend on intern availability.
