Strategic Tax Operations and Innovation Leader

Marsh McLennan is seeking a Strategic Tax Operations and Innovation Leader to join our global Tax team. As the Global Tax O&I Leader, you will report directly to the Chief Tax Officer and be responsible for driving operational efficiency and excellence within our Tax Department. The role is based in New York.

In this role, you will collaborate with the Tax team and cross-functional partners to support business initiatives, tax planning, tax compliance and controversies, and other organizational objectives through process, team, and technology efficiencies. You will lead a team of tax professionals and work closely with Controllers and FP&A to source and manage data to be able to deliver on initiatives and projects. You will help the Tax team to address current challenges and prepare for the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of tax professionals who are responsible for ensuring effective execution of tax operations through ongoing process improvement initiatives, and the design, development and operation of tax data and technology platform that allows MarshMcLennan Tax to effectively and efficiently plan, report, and comply with existing and future tax requirements.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize tax operations and improve efficiency / identify and implement process improvements to streamline tax processes and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align tax processes with overall business objectives / develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Provide a clear path to automation for manual processes, including considering the use of AI.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the move to automation and efficient processes, development of solutions for compliance, provision, planning and controversy have the proper governance framework.
  • Co-develop, monitor and analyze key tax performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.
  • Partner with the Tax Planning and the International Tax Reporting & Compliance/Controversy teams to stay updated on tax regulations and industry best practices to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Provide support to and develop strategies for the broader Tax team for complex data and process issues.
  • Develop a five-year roadmap for the future of the Tax Department including, people strategy, a plan for the iterative transformation of tax technology and to align to broader finance and enterprise-wide data and system initiatives. This should include developing a budget and business case for any investment required and a process to keep the roadmap current annually or more frequently as circumstances require.
  • Prepare and present reports and recommendations to senior management on tax operational performance.
  • Partner with the VAT and Transfer Pricing operations team to understand and meet data requirements for intercompany transactions.
  • Oversee Tax department administration, including budgeting, vendor management, space planning, talent development and other administrative matters.
  • Develop a comprehensive tax data requirements catalogue and ensure Tax requirements are communicated consistently outside of Tax.
  • Act as representative for Tax in Finance and other business transformation initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required. A law degree and/or Master's in Tax strongly preferred.
  • Extensive experience in tax operations (minimum of ten years), preferably in a leadership role, including with monthly, quarterly, year-end accounting close cycles, accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting, SOX controls, transaction, audit and scenario modeling, and forecasting.
  • Experience leading projects designed to drive efficiencies in teams and processes and managing multiple stakeholders with a proven track record of implementing process improvements and driving operational excellence. Thus, the candidate should have well-honed project management skills, including ability to motivate and drive results in multi-geographic and multi-cultural environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of leading-edge practices, processes, and tax/accounting technologies including most of the following: Sabrix, ONESOURCE, Corptax, Sharepoint, MS PowerSuite, Alteryx, Tableau, and Power BI.
  • Strong working knowledge of non-tax financial systems including ERP and EPM solutions. Oracle on-premise and cloud a plus. Experience working directly with Controllership, FP&A and Treasury operations teams is required.
  • Experience developing tax data and business requirements as inputs to ERP, EPM and Data Lake/Warehouse projects.
  • Experience developing quantitative and qualitative business cases for change programs inside a corporate environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities with a proven track record of developing people and coaching for success.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to adapt to changing tax regulations and industry trends.

Marsh McLennan is committed to hybrid work, which includes the flexibility of working remotely and the collaboration, connections and professional development benefits of working together in the office. All Marsh McLennan colleagues are expected to be in their local office or working onsite with clients at least three days per week. Office-based teams will identify at least one "anchor day" per week on which their full team will be together in person.

The applicable base salary range for this role is $224,800 to $337,300.

The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
