The Role:

This role is an exciting opportunity to be a critical part of Moderna's Infectious Diseases research team. Reporting to the Director, Biomarkers and Assays, the Sr. Scientist will contribute to the advancement of Moderna's mRNA based bacterial vaccines and therapeutic programs. The Sr. Scientist will be accountable for supporting preclinical and clinical biomarkers for bacterial vaccine programs and will apply expertise in immunological assay development to bacterial vaccine programs at Moderna. The candidate will also apply immunoassay expertise to support partnership programs. Located in Cambridge, MA, the individual will support collaborations with external partners advancing into early clinical studies.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Apply expertise in bacterial immunology and functional assay development to advance bacterial vaccine programs
  • Apply scientific expertise to support mechanism of action studies for bacterial vaccine programs.
  • Develop immunological assays using diverse assay platforms such as MSD, Luminex, and Octet
  • Develop and support the routine performance of a variety of ligand binding assays, cell-based assays, neutralization assays as well as flow cytometry panels
  • Develop and implement a variety of functional assays to support the biological characterization of clinical and preclinical vaccine candidates
  • Assist in the identification and validation of new targets for vaccine intervention
  • Work closely with preclinical and clinical CROs to develop assays and immunological endpoint evaluations for preclinical studies, review, and report results.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams across the Moderna ecosystem, collaborators and CROs to progress candidates from Discovery through IND-enabling studies
  • Identify and implement relevant novel immunological approaches and technology to accelerate infectious disease research
  • Manage multiple experiments, projects, and interactions with supporting functions simultaneously
  • Interpret, troubleshoot, and report complex data
  • Propose novel vaccine and therapeutic targets aligned with Moderna ID strategy

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or Chemistry with at least 3 years of related postdoctoral research experience. Exceptional recent Ph.D. candidates would also be considered at the Scientist level
  • Deep understanding of bacterial diseases, bacterial pathogenesis, and bacterial immunology
  • Expertise in the design and set up of a variety of bacterial in vitro assays, serological assays, cell-based assays, and functional assays.
  • Experience working with diverse platforms such as Luminex, MSD, and Octet is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute new experimental approaches
  • Excellent team spirit, communication, and presentation skills
  • Contributions to high impact publications and presentations in the field of bacterial immunology and/or vaccinology.
  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new path for evaluating vaccine mediated responses, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes
  • Preferred: Expertise in supporting preclinical and clinical vaccine candidates.
  • Preferred: 2-3 years of independent research experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry
  • Preferred: Experience in CRO management and academic collaborations
