What You Will Contribute:

Badger Meter is seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to work in our Racine location.

This Sr. Engineer is responsible for all aspects of electronic engineering related to product design for precision instrumentation including digital circuitry (logic, gating and timing); analog circuitry and sensor signal conditioning. Will work closely with sales and marketing to develop products and define specifications. Will work closely with other Electronic Engineers focused on firmware development to specify DSP/microcontroller interface. Will work with project and quality managers to allow for timely delivery and quality while minimizing cost and inventory. Sr. Engineer provides oversight of maintenance activities for a product line and/or acts as new product development project lead engineer for other projects. Acts as a mentor to other engineers.

Major job duties/accountabilities:

  • Acts as NPD or other Project lead engineer for hardware development
  • Sustaining engineering - Provides oversight of maintenance activities for a product line
  • Works within a team of firmware development engineers providing mentoring to electronic engineers
  • Ensures company procedures are followed (self and mentees)
  • Defines the scope of a task/project
  • Develops or Coordinates with Project Managers on creation of project schedules, budgets and resource requirements
  • Executes to schedule/budget to meet targets
  • Defines and controls product hardware designs
  • Directly responsible for product/process performance
  • Manages engineering change processes
  • May be accountable to lead Project Manager or Principle Engineer.
  • Ability to determine risk and define mitigation methods
  • Communicate status and solutions to management
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-discipline team
  • Ability to define the resources and time to complete projects


Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent degree
  • 7+ years experience
  • Digital circuit design and troubleshooting, Microcontroller/Logic, 10MHz to 150MHz.
  • Analog circuit design and troubleshooting, DC to 100KHz. Sensor amplification and signal conditioning of millivolt level signals related to frequency, temperature and pressure sensing.
  • Experience with, schematic capture, mixed-signal circuit board layout, and circuit characterization using EDA and simulation tools like Altium
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Serial communications circuits (USB, UART, RS-232/422/485, I2C, SPI
  • Industrial communication circuits (Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACNet MS/TP, EtherNet/IP)
  • Wireless communication circuits (Bluetooth, Zigbee, WiFi)
  • Knowledge of proper grounding, shielding and EMC techniques for FCC and CE approval.
  • Circuitry for high precision period and frequency measurements as well as logic for digital I/O and system control.
  • Familiarity with revision control software (SVN) or equivalent for printed circuit board design
