In this role you will help build and grow PacBio's employee safety programs. You will work one-on-one with employees at all levels of the organization and in all departments and functions. You will learn a lot about the business and what is involved in designing and making PacBio products. You will teach employees about identifying risks and how to protect themselves and their colleagues.

This position will be expected to build on programs already in place to support the company as it expands its workforce in numbers and global product distribution.

This position will take direction and report to the Senior Manager, EHS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from, an accredited academic institution in: Physical, chemical, or biological sciences; Industrial safety or Engineering
  • AND a minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an EHS specialist or safety engineer

  • Knowledgeable of Cal-OSHA regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft office

Nice to haves
  • Experience with incident reporting software systems
  • Experience with learning management software systems
  • Experience with Articulate Storyline or similar training authoring tools
  • Familiarity with noise monitoring and dosimetry equipment
  • General awareness of quality management systems and/or work conditions for ISO certified businesses
  • Knowledge of EHS management systems including ISO14000 and/or ISO45000

Job responsibilities

Function as the company injury, illness program administrator and lead efforts to identify, document, communicate and control workplace risks.
  • Gain in depth awareness of the job roles and tasks performed by PacBio employees to understand the physical and health hazards present and how workers may be exposed.
  • Perform periodic inspections of the workplace to identify hazards.
  • Assess contributors and causes of workplace incidents, injuries, and illnesses
  • Develop options and make recommendations on ways to reduce risk and control hazards
  • Manage injury and illness documentation (OSHA log) and submit reports to federal and state regulators

Assist employees with identification, selection, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Manage the company safety shoe program
  • Assist EHS colleague with prescription safety glasses program
  • Assist EHS colleague with lab coat program
  • Work with the Laser safety officer to identify, procure and provide appropriate laser safety glasses
  • Oversee the filtering facepiece voluntary use program
  • Perform noise assessments to determine need for hearing protection. Where needed, select, procure and stock hearing protection devices
  • Coach employees how to use, store and care for their PPE
  • Help develop and streamline processes to provide PPE to US and ex-US field-based employees

Manage the first-aid kits and medical response supplies
  • Identify appropriate types and quantities of supplies needed
  • Work with third party vendor to ensure timely restocking of on-site first-aid kits
  • Periodically review the "approved items" list for the stocked first-aid cases

Develop, review, and update applicable safety program documentation
  • Injury, Illness Prevention Plan
  • Personal Protective Equipment Program
  • Hearing Conservation Program

Design tools and training materials that help employees identify, understand and protect themselves from risks.

Develop messaging and promotions to encourage a proactive safety culture
  • Coordinate recurring EHS events including Safe + Sound week (August) and Fire prevention month (October)
  • Messages to encourage early reporting of hazards, injuries, incidents and near misses
  • Prepare and submit EHS messaging templates to internal communications for inclusion on PBTV

Provide support on other EHS programs and projects including but not limited to
  • Sustainability and ESG efforts
  • Global product chemical compliance
  • Emergency management/incident command
  • Waste management and minimization
  • Biological safety
  • EHS software systems

Other

This position generally works Monday-Friday during regular business hours. The individual will be expected to work on-site 4 days a week. The 5th day can be work from home.
