Salary Range:

Annual salary - $40,000. This is a live-in position. Other benefits include a meal allowance of $2,300 per year (twelve months); relocation allowance up to $400; access to professional development funds; partially furnished one bedroom/one bathroom apartment, including laundry, utilities, expanded television service and internet; and comprehensive package of University health, tuition and retirement benefits.
Job Summary:

Southern Methodist University (SMU), a private university in Dallas, Texas, seeks a Residential Community Director. This is a dual role that provides supervision to the SMU Service House and the place-based community engagement initiative, Engage Dallas. The Residential Community Director of SMU Service House, a community of 28 students with a focus on community service, provides leadership to develop and sustain a positive residential community within the house. Additionally, the SMUSH RCD is responsible for successfully accomplishing all administrative functions required in managing a university residential community. As the Coordinator for Engage Dallas, the RCD leads campus-wide community engagement opportunities via the Engage Dallas initiative, including but not limited to supervising a minimum of 11 student directors. Duties of the Residential Community Director span multiple offices within the unit. Position is live-in and reports to an Associate Director for Residence Life and the Associate Director for High-Impact Practices. Position serves in an on-call rotation.

Flexible start date; anticipate early Jan. 2022.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and train 11 or more student directors leading community engagement efforts and fulfilling requirements in their respective Residential Commons. Partner with the Office of Social Change & Intercultural Engagement to offer placed-based community service experiences for residential students by Residential Commons. Serve on the Engage Dallas Core Team and implementation/project teams.
  • Develop a personal knowledge of individual residents to better provide assistance, support, and resources as needed. Connect residents to community organizations. Assess needs of residents and ensure programming occurs to promote a positive living and learning environment that fosters a sense of belonging. Advise house committee chairs and lead house meetings. Assist with retention efforts.
  • Lead and/or serve on one or more Residence Life and Student Housing (RLSH) (and potentially Student Affairs) committees; meet regularly with supervisor and other RLSH staff.
  • Support the development and execution of major Engage Dallas programs, including but not limited to, Days of Service, Residential Commons Monthly Service Events, Alternative Breaks, and other programmatic partnerships.
  • Assist with occupancy management as scheduled or requested, including but not limited to managing room and hall changes, check-in and check-out activity, roster verifications. Monitor physical condition of assigned areas and report work requests and desired facility improvements per established procedures.
  • Train, supervise and evaluate performance of student staff. Attend Peer Leader supervisor meetings; conduct regularly scheduled individual and group staff meetings. Promote and train student staff in area of community engagement.
  • Assist in major annual processes regarding staff selection, assessments, opening, closing, and training; Respond to student and facilities emergencies. Serve on on-call rotation. Manage budget & financial paperwork including purchasing and expense reports. Serve as conduct officer for hearing student conduct cases occurring in residential areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet RLSH, Student Affairs and University goals.


Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree in related field is strongly preferred.

Field of study in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Counseling in Higher Education, or related field, is preferred.

Previous Residence Life experience or community engagement experience (full time, or graduate) is required.

Work experience in related areas of Student Affairs is preferred.

Experience working in a Residential College setting or experience working with academic and faculty partners, is preferred.

Experience supervising student staff is preferred.

Microsoft Office skills are required (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to establish rapport and build relationships with key constituencies in a diverse community.

Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent listening skills.

Must possess significant problem solving skills, with the ability to develop solutions with creativity, resourcefulness and diplomacy.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and project management skills. Must be attentive to details.

Candidate must have effective leadership and supervisory skills, as this position interviews, hires RAs and leads Engage Dallas student directors.

Must be fiscally responsible, as this position will purchase supplies, monitor expenditures against budget, and prepare necessary documents for review/approval.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Candidate must be able to work independently, yet work collaboratively with other university partners.

Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends, and serve in an on-call rotation.

Must be willing and able to live in and be a presence in the community.
