Primary Role

The Senior Technologist helps to drive the vision of the Physical Security leadership forward through the implementation, enhancement, establishing processes for physical security technology, which includes, Camera Systems, Access Control Systems, Physical Security Incident, and Event Management (P-SIEM), and reporting technology. They help define and evolve the physical security technology direction for the team. They assist in the creation and maintenance of a technology roadmap that enables business outcomes and are learning to reliably forecast business needs in the 3-5 year horizon. The Senior Technologist is leading projects with some guidance that execute against this roadmap. This includes development from concept through implementation, and into steady state. The Senior Technologist adheres to technology standards and the governance framework set by leadership. They work collaboratively with other organizations to ensure physical security technology is reliable, efficient, and available to the business. The Senior Technologist exhibits leadership to drive Physical Security Technology forward to help enable the Enterprise Security organization and keep American Water Employees and Contractors safe through the use of effective security technology implementations.

Key Accountabilities

Technology Roadmap Development (15%)

  • Drive the effort to develop plans that match short-term and long-term business goals with specific technology solutions to help meet those goals. The plan applies to a new product or process or to an emerging technology.
  • Working industry experts and our technology partners, ensure the plans help:
  • Reach a consensus about a set of needs and the technologies required to satisfy those needs
  • Provide a mechanism to help forecast technology developments, and
  • Provide a framework to help plan and coordinate technology developments.

  • Technology Expertise (60%)
    • Act as an expert in physical security technology, deployment strategies, and roadmap planning and provide detailed information and advice as necessary in that specialization in order to achieve successful outcomes.
    • Develop and/or promote technical solutions which support the security requirements within their area of expertise.
    • Be accountable for specific deliverables in relation to design, operation, and maintenance of physical security technologies.
    • Lead Technical activity on a daily basis related to physical security technologies.
    Product Owner Support (25%)
    • Support the physical security organization by managing stakeholder expectations for project deliverables, managing communications, and helping to implement an effective system to deploy and manage physical security initiatives.
    • Engage closely with the physical security specialists to understand what objectives they want to accomplish through technology enablement and then work with the team to deploy and enhance those technologies to meet the needs.

    Knowledge/Skills

    • Working knowledge of physical security technologies and some applicability for enterprise deployments across large geographically dispersed footprints.
    • Working knowledge of IT Concepts to include TCP/IP, VLANs, Cell Modem Templates, and Amazon Web Services System Management.
    • Ability to apply these technology specialties to solve practical problems in a high-speed environment with multi-function teams for small to medium, complex systems with some guidance.
    • Milestone, AWS, Lenel Onguard, PSIM, Cellular Modems, Axis Cameras, Gates.

    Experience/Education

    • 5 to 10 years' experience working in the physical security industry.
    • 2-5 years experience working with/managing physical security technology.
    • Experience with Milestone VMS is preferred.
    • Bachelors' degree in Information Systems or similar technology field is preferred [equivalent work experience will be considered].
    • Appropriate technical certification in specialty area preferred.
    • OnGuard Lenel Certification access control system preferred

    Work Environment

    • May be remote.

    Travel Requirements

    As necessary, up to 20%.
