Position Summary

Senior Statistician & Data Visualization Developer employs statistics, programming, technology, and data management techniques to prepare, transform, and analyze institutional data and construct exploratory, explanatory, and predictive statistical models. The position identifies areas in which analytics and visualization have potential to yield insight about University fundraising and pipeline development; designs and conducts research projects; and interprets research findings and makes recommendations to support planning and development within the Universitys Advancement unit.

The Senior Statistician and Data Visualization Developer also supports the Advancement Strategic Analytics & Prospect Development team by responding to ad hoc requests for information, developing dashboards and visualizations to communicate prospect development and fundraising data, and training and reviewing the work of Business Analysts and Prospect Development Analysts to ensure the integrity of reporting and research functions.

The Senior Statistician & Data Visualization Developer will be a leader in fostering strategic, collaborative, and sustainable fundraising practices at the University of Denver. The Senior Statistician & Data Visualization Developer must have the ability to offer consultative support and develop new reports and processes that are accurate, clear, accessible, and replicable.

Essential Functions

Statistics & Reporting

  • Applies advanced statistics and quantitative research methods to develop metrics and build exploratory, explanatory, and predictive models that inform pipeline management and fundraising strategy.
  • Designs, conducts, and oversees insightful research and analysis to meet the needs of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Advancement, the Advancement leadership team, the frontline fundraising team, the University's Board of Trustees, Advancement Senior Management Team, and academic and administrative units, resulting in recommendations for evidence-based decisions regarding campaign goal setting, pipeline management, prospect development, and fundraising strategy.
  • Use Tableau, Cognos, CRM Advance, SSRS, SQL, SPSS, SPSS Modeler, and Excel to explore data, validate reports, and supply data and reporting.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts to provide ad-hoc reporting as necessary

Project Management

  • Identifies emergent reporting and analytics needs within Advancement and collaborates with stakeholders to leverage opportunities for growth, development, automation, and standardization by developing reports, dashboards, models, and visualizations.
  • Leads and supports research and reporting projects in the office, including training business analysts and prospect development analysts on relevant data, technology, and statistical methods to complete their duties.
  • Manage reporting projects independently from inception to completion and follow up with report users to maintain reports and make adaptations in response to changing operations and strategies.
  • Track work and communicate project progress and statuses in BIAs task management solution, Asana

Data & Systems Management

  • Collaborate closely with Prospect Development team to align reporting strategy with the larger Advancement and fundraising goals
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts to design Advancements information architecture, including data definitions and meta-data to ensure that IT, report users and SAPD colleagues understand reports and defined fields
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of quantitative research methods, statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, forecasting, predictive analytics, machine learning algorithms, and multivariate testing as applied in the social sciences.
  • Knowledge of data visualization and dashboard development.
  • Ability to identify potential areas in which statistical research techniques can be applied in order to improve results or increase efficiency.
  • Ability to creatively frame, investigate, and solve research problems.
  • Ability to efficiently extract and transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex data and research findings to a variety of audiences through reports, presentations, and visualizations.
  • Ability to interpret research findings and make appropriate recommendations to executive leadership, senior staff, and academic and administrative stakeholders.
  • Ability to design, automate, and standardize systems and processes to support dissemination of institutional data and application of statistical models.
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of statistical packages/statistical programming languages such as SPSS, Python, SAS, and R.
  • Advanced proficiency with programming languages such as SQL, Python, Javascript, and R to quickly and efficiently extract, transform, and analyze data.
  • Ability to automate data extraction, cleaning and analytical processes.
  • Proficiency with a data visualization package such as Tableau, D3, and R.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative research methods, statistics, business, higher education, or related social science field.
  • 5 years of professional quantitative research and analytics experience.
  • Experience with the collection, preparation, analysis, and reporting of data related to fundraising, higher education, or related social science field.
  • Project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in quantitative research methods, statistics, business, higher education, or related social science field.
  • SQL programming experience.
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) databases.
  • Microsoft CRM Dynamics software experience.
  • Experience using reporting tools such as Cognos, Tableau, SSRS, Access, Visual Studio, or Cognos to create and deliver end-user reports.
  • Experience with process mapping, process analysis, project management, or data mining.
  • Experience with user experience testing.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., some nights and weekends, as required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
