Senior Product Development Engineer Tweel (Experience Level Professional)

KEY EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS:

1. Lead new product development activities for the development of new airless tire technologies, adaptation to new vehicles/applications, and/or new product launches

2. Lead the development projects following the Tweel product development milestone process and quality system

3. Further develop the Tweel design metier through advancement in design tools, material application, modeling, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES:

Product Development:

1. Lead the development of new airless tire market products for both OE and Replacement customers in a worldwide market

  • Design the Shearbeam, Tread Pattern, Spoke Package, Hub Profile, Hub/Wheel, and required markings through design events and collaboration with the Tweel RDI team, MARC personnel, and other outside resources to meet the CdC of the new Tweel
  • Model and define the Tweel and Tweel components through FEA Analysis / Performance Simulation
  • Work with potential customers to develop Tweel geometry and performance specifications
  • Use and refine the Tweel DFMEA to evaluate performance risks and develop a test plan
  • Provide direction and cooperatively work with the other Tweel RDI team members in the RDI process:
    • Green Designer / RPQ Industrialization Engineers
    • Wheel / Hub Development Engineers
    • Process Development Engineers
    • Thermoset and Thermoplastic Resin Material Development Engineers / Chemists
    • Test Engineers, and Test Method Development Engineers
    • Product Development Technicians
    • Vehicle / Test Machine Mechanics
    • Field Placement / CAT1 and Field Support Engineers
    • Project Management Office "PMO" / Dedicated Project Managers
  • Support the prototype builds in the Tweel factory or 3rd party off-taker
  • Validate the performance of new Tweels with lab/MARC, external suppliers, and on-vehicle testing throughout the development process for a variety of vehicles/applications/markets including:
    • Commercial and Prosumer Lawn Care Mowers
    • Skid Steer Loaders for landscaping, construction, dairy, paving, etc.
    • Compact Tractors for gardening, estate maintenance and farming
    • Truck Mounted Forklifts
    • Golf Carts for leisure, recreation, golf courses, retirement communities, campuses, utility, etc.
    • Side by Side UTVs and ATVs/Quads for farming, utility, construction, recreation, military, police, etc.
    • Autonomous Vehicles for military, workhorse machines and last mile delivery
    • Material Handling forklifts for warehouses and distribution centers
    • Compact Wheel Loaders for construction and mining
  • Use CAT1 / Field Testing to evaluate Tweel performance in the market prior to launch
  • Ensure successful new product industrialization and quality planning for new Tweel designs to ensure successful transition to mass production in the Tweel factory or 3rd party off-taker
  • Create and manage the Tweel Cured Specification for all SKUs owned
  • Validate Tweel compliance to various regulatory and EHS standards such as REACH
    • Provide airless tire standardization proposals for ISGR to present to the Tire and Rim Association
    • Provide new Tweel material information for EHS and regulatory compliance
    • Request EHS and regulatory risk assessments for new materials and material suppliers
    • Respond to external requests for compliance certificates
  • Provide support to the Tweel plant for quality / yield concerns and issues
  • Monitor field performance/warranty returns and lead robustness improvement activities as needed

    2. Develop new airless tire technologies to broaden our airless tire capability from Concept to Market
  • Conduct feasibility studies of airless tire applications in new markets such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, forklifts, aircraft, mining, agriculture track systems, two-wheel, irrigation, etc.
  • Support the development of value propositions for the new products/markets
  • Lead/Support new concept/techno development activities within the airless tire DORD organization
  • Lead the development and qualification of new materials and material suppliers including non-standard Michelin materials such as cast polyurethane, various thermoplastics, resin infused fiberglass reinforcements, etc
  • Collaborate with the Tweel Test Engineer to adapt test equipment and develop new methods as needed
  • Explore new Tweel and semi-finished manufacturing processes such as injection molding, C3M, 3D printing, etc.
  • Support process validation activities for new manufacturing equipment / processes

    Project Management:

    1. Create detailed project development timing plans and budget estimates for all projects

    2. Request and manage the codification of new SKUs (CAIs, MSPNs, Customer Part Numbers, etc.) 3. Steer projects according to the documented plan making and communicating changes as necessary; provide periodic updates through the Tweel Program Management process

    4. Plan required project resources (molds, prototype builds, tests etc.) through Kephren and the internal Tweel planning organization

    5. Manage and document projects using the Michelin Project Approach following the Tweel Product Development Milestone process:
  • Support the BAT/G0 Business Opportunity Assessment Process
  • Conduct Design Events, DFMEA reviews, DVs and DRs including industry and quality team members
  • Present and document the major milestones (ie, G1, G2, etc.) to the Tweel Venture Steering Team

    6. Estimate Tweel CRI and provide updates at each milestone for product launch financial analysis

    7. Monitor spending and communicate significant changes through the milestone process

    8. Complete PPAP processes and documentation as the need arises by Original Equipment customers

    9. Build and manage technical drawings and data packages for new and existing Tweels / Tweel components

    10. Participate in certifying/qualifying new off-take Tweel manufactures

    11. Write technical bulletins and other internal / sales communication documents

    12. Provide product data, features/benefits, reasons to buy, etc. for tire labels, Tweel website, and digital or printed marketing materials

    Professional Development:

    1. Advance the Tweel airless tire metier by helping to develop and implement new tools and technologies
  • Improved design practices / tool
  • Modeling and simulation approaches / iterative optimization coding and scripts
  • Alternative prototyping processes
  • New test method development

    2. Propose new Tweel design ideas for performance improvement, cost reduction, market segment expansion, etc.
  • New Shearbeam architectures, tread patterns and materials
  • New Spoke geometries and materials
  • New Hub designs, materials, and fabrication processes
  • New Manufacturing methods and processes

    3. Contribute to the development and documentation of Tweel design knows by updating the Tweel Design Homologation Guide (DHG) as new fundamental knowledge is learned
  • Review new designs against the existing DHG for DV/DR reviews
Participate in DHG update activities and provide supporting information for changes

4. Support the protection of Tweel and airless tire / NPT intellectual property through the creation/filing of invention records and patents, and participation in the review of the airless tire IP competitive landscape

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field, Master's Degree desired

Qualification 3:

Qualification 4:

Must have experience developing products for market. Cured tire design and analyst experience is desirable.

Qualification 5:

Must have solid modeling design and FEA experience using Catia and Abaqus or similar CAE tools (Python coding experience is highly desirable, Solidworks is a plus).

Qualification 6:

Must have good project management skills. Experience with the tire development / milestone process is highly desirable.

Qualification 7:

Must have excellent communication skills and work effectively with team members, other Michelin departments, outside suppliers, and customers.

Qualification 8:

Candidate should demonstrate good hands-on capability as well as manage and orchestrate technical work.

Qualification 9:

Must have the ability to travel to customers and test sites a small fraction of the time, maybe up to 10-20% at times.
