Senior Finance Generalists perform a hybrid of complex finance work, encompassing a range of specialties, such as accounting, budget, payroll, financial aid, financial analysis, purchasing, or treasury. Senior Finance Generalists assume more responsibilities that require deep analysis. They are distinguished by years of experience, depth of institutional knowledge, and sophistication of expertise. Work is conducted independently, and Senior Finance Generalists are responsible for training and mentoring emerging finance professionals.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Virginia School of Medicine, seeks applicants for a Senior Finance Generalist to join its administrative team in the new UVA Orthopedic Center on Ivy Road. Applicants should possess a comprehensive understanding of fund accounting, and some experience with post-award management to insure compliance of all applicable policies and procedures is preferred. The selected candidate will also serve as a resource to faculty and staff on all applicable policies and procedures.

  • Produce, reconcile, and distribute the financial reports for gift, endowment, local (including clinical accounts), and select state general funds on a consistent basis according to University guidelines and the School of Medicine's reconciliation schedule.
  • Ensure that all accounts are funded and budgeted appropriately. Clear deficits and/or suspense accounts as needed. Monitor project activity and work with stakeholders to address deficits or close projects and tasks upon completion. Provide assistance identifying funding sources and completing forms upon request.
  • Examine cash balances monthly, invest funds, or spend appropriately to ensure the optimization of cash management. Reconcile GL monthly.
  • Review and/or approve employee reimbursements, invoices, and purchase requisitions in a timely and accurate manner. Ensure that all charges are supported by required documentation.
  • Review internal service provider charges for accuracy.
  • Monitor IFP and undergraduate medical education (UME) funds to ensure payments are correct.
  • Monitor funds flow, and reconcile true ups.
  • Prepare the budget for departmental operations, including both the UVA/State budget and UPG clinical budget with the department finance team. Oversee the personal services portion of the budget. Monitor budget for variances, and prepare analysis and monthly variance reports as requested within time frames requested.
  • Establish, review and edit labor schedules and costing allocations as needed.
  • Prepare and present financial reports and recommendations to management.
  • Maintain departmental commitments, and distribute reports to faculty on expenditures and remaining balance of funds.
  • Work with Grants Administrator on post award grant issues including deficits, effort, payroll allocation, etc.
  • Work with PIs to provide financial reports and guidance. Complete adjustments as needed.
  • Assist with annual completion of the faculty remuneration plan, incentives and other special projects.
  • Train and mentor junior and/or new personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Applicants must be highly organized, and detail-oriented as the selected applicant will need to record and report financial and budget data clearly and accurately. Excellent analytical ability, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are also required. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Preference will be given to applicants who have prior experience with financial management at UVA, and are experienced with University financial reporting tools such as UBI and Anaplan, which is used in the School of Medicine.

Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Five years of financial experience

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
