The Senior Director for Global Engagement reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Strategic Partnerships and leads the GEISS leadership team. The Senior Director provides leadership, strategy, and vision for the university in the areas of International Student and Scholar Services, International Student Engagement, Study Abroad, and works in collaboration with colleges and other academic and administrative units and divisions to facilitate, expand and enhance international education and global initiatives. The Senior Director also serves as the Senior International Officer for the university, advising and assisting senior leadership on global issues, policies and advocacy. As a member of the Enrollment Management Strategic Partnerships leadership, the Senior Director will also collaborate with the international admissions team on best ways to recruit, yield, and support students from all over the world.

The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


Responsibilities:

  • Lead Global Engagement and International Support Services (GEISS) and direct the development, implementation, and assessment of the GEISS mission.
  • Provide direct supervision and on-going development for the Director of ISSS, Director of Strategic Partnerships, and the Director for Education Abroad and Global Engagement, and indirect supervision of the GEISS team members.
  • Direct vision and strategies for enhancing global engagement and international student services and programs at The New School, with an emphasis on recruitment, retention, academic enhancement, and government compliance.
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships across the university in order to best support and advocate for international and global opportunity students including, admissions, ESL, academic schools, advising, career services and student support.
  • Develop and maintain the GEISS strategic communication plan in collaboration with stakeholder departments, programs, and external partners to foster and maintain collaborative relationships.
  • Ensure University compliance with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regarding F and J students and exchange visitor scholars and their dependents.
  • Maintain in-depth, advanced knowledge to interpret and provide guidance on federal immigration regulations as they pertain to our international students and scholars.
  • Oversee and manage international agreements portfolio and liaise with academic departments to determine mission fit.
  • Oversee all aspects of developing, administering, and ensuring the quality of the university's education abroad portfolio including student participation, intercultural learning outcomes, and health, safety and security.
  • Drive the strategy, assessment and maintenance of university global partnerships in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Partnerships.
  • Develop and oversee global partnerships that align with the university's strategic priorities and strengthen its admissions pipeline.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead reporting practices, manage data and streamline processes for both internal office operations and mandatory government reporting.
  • Implement policies, procedures, and practices that encourage international student and global opportunity participant engagement and success.
  • Oversee all engagement and retention initiatives directly related to study abroad opportunities and international student services.
  • Oversee all staff recruitment, hiring, onboarding, ongoing training and development, and performance management for the GEISS team.
  • Develop and manage the GEISS budget while maintaining compliance with University procurement policies and procedures.
  • Manage crises involving students studying and/or traveling abroad and international students, scholars, and their families.
  • Establish core competencies and identify professional development opportunities in order to support staff in meeting their goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required and a minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, demonstrating management experience in the areas of global engagement, study abroad, international student services and programming.
  • Experience supervising, developing, mentoring, and motivating a diverse staff team, while directly supervising professional staff.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, including sensitivity to cultural differences and working in diverse populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple collaborative projects and systems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and be able to serve as a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Designated School Official (DSO) and a Department of State (DOS) Alternate Responsible Office (ARO).
  • Ability to pass a required background check.
  • Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO).
  • Ability to skillfully navigate Banner, SEVIS & Sunapsis software systems.
  • Experience living/working outside the U.S.
  • Fluency in a second language(s).
  • Experience as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and Designated School Official (DSO).
