ABOUT OUR RESEARCH DATA AND ANALYTICS TEAM

The Research Data & Analytics Team within R&D IT is a global team of highly experienced, skilled data and AI engineers and professionals, passionate about delivering innovative services and products. The mission of our team is to transform the way the R&D discovers and develops medicine through data, analytics, and AI. To achieve this, we partner with scientific teams to deliver ground-breaking capabilities, products and platforms that enable scientists to accelerate medicines that are safe and effective for patients.

SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING PLATFORM

The Scientific Computing platform is a foundational capability to deliver HPC and scaled computing solutions for AstraZeneca's R&D. Embedded within the Research D&A organisation it provides the backbone to domain-specific analytic products around computational chemistry, imaging, multi-OMICs, structural biology, data science and AI engineering.

The SCP team is accountable for the delivery of full-stack analytic products, creating an augmented HPC experience. Combining modern HPC with a powerful DevOps stack and cloud-native technologies is powering AstraZeneca's R&D.

ABOUT THE PLATFORM

The success of a highly empowered and fast pacing DevOps engineering organisation is strongly dependent on the platform, tools and technologies which are readily available to the team. The HPC DevOps Tech Lead is responsible to drive the vision, and strategy realisation of a Platform Ops approach to underpinning the delivery of the Scientific Computing team.

The successful candidate will promote DevOps engineering practices and technologies inside the scientific computing team as well as outside of the enterprise. Seeking opportunities to collaborate across the company or with our industry partners to bolster our ability to deliver impactful outcomes.

The DevOps technology space is fast pacing and under constant innovation. Scouting industry trends and influencing the evolution of the platform will be a key part of the role. As part of the SCP engineering leadership, the candidate will actively drive innovation while harmonising the technology stack between high-performance computing, scaled cloud solutions and modern AI requirements.

The role is on the IC track. It is encouraged to spend 40/30/30 on hands-on development, and leadership activities like coaching, mentoring and driving the Platform Ops strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for technical direction and architectural decisions of the DevOps platform ensuring we have the right technologies to enable IT teams, R&D scientists, and AI engineers to work effectively
  • Work closely with the SCP Engineering leadership team to evolve and harmonise technology strategies, roadmaps, and vision for HPC and cloud capabilities that meet key strategic needs
  • Drive developer adoption and promote DevOps practice, tools and technologies
  • Be a champion for high standards to ensure best practices are developed in the SCP team
  • Coach, mentor, and develop other team members, lead and inspire and be a crucial part of their development and retention
  • Support the SCP team during hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development
  • Design, solve and implement advanced technology challenges across the entire stack
  • Drive a strong innovation approach to ensure we stay at the forefront while keeping aligned with the team vision
  • Stay up to date with innovative DevOps & platform practices and architectural patterns
  • Advocate and advance modern, agile development practices and help develop and promote a great engineering culture
  • Contribute to the engineering team's effort by writing code, solving advanced challenges, or encouraging the incubation of innovative ideas and approaches
  • Support the team to overcome fundamental challenges for testing modules and infrastructure, driving excellence in code quality and test requirements with the proper unit, functional, integration tests, and high-quality documentation

Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Bachelor's, Masters or Doctorate degree in a quantitative or engineering field (computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, engineering, among others); or equivalent work experience delivering modern HPC and/or AI/ML solutions
  • Previous experience in developing and operating HPC at scale
  • Deep understanding of cloud technologies and engineering paradigms
  • Strong passion and experience in DevOps, cloud-native and infrastructure as code
  • Experience in cultivating values, culture, and team topology suitable to champion impactful & empowered DevOps teams
  • Experience in platform engineering, software engineering and machine learning best practices, including version control, continuous integration (CI) and continuous development (CD), containerisation, and shell scripting
  • Proven understanding of product-centric delivery models, DevOps, and Agile methodologies
  • Background or curiosity about biology or medicine is a plus
  • Solid understanding of analytic products and scientific computing software relevant to pharma R&D
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills
