Job Summary

The Safety Technician works as a partner with all facets of operations to analyze the manufacturing process to eliminate hazards. This individual will work closely with management by, providing guidance, insight, and consultation in support of our company's continuous improvement in the areas of environmental, health and safety. The Safety Technician will assist employees in identifying and correcting hazards, establishing best safe practices, and training/coaching employees. This individual will be responsible for the daily safety and environmental requirements associated with each crew and will have the support of regional managers, operational leaders and EHS managers/directors to assist and help you grow your career in EHS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Area Safety Manager to ensure all Environmental, Health and Safety programs are kept updated and management system established to track implementation
  • Provide a strong on-the-floor presence that embraces coaching all levels of management, supervisors, and employees toward observing, understanding, and correcting behaviors and conditions that can lead to incidents
  • Provides technical guidance to supervisors in the investigation of safety incidents, including root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Leads investigation on serious incidents when assigned and track though closure corrective actions for all incidents
  • Maintain all tasks in the Health & Safety Management System/Riskonnect, and the Environmental Management System
  • Maintain operations white board calendar of (HSMS/EMS) required tasks and assist employees assigned to tasks. Support site leadership on assignment of (HSMS/EMS) tasks and support program requirement alignment
  • Develops and delivers EH&S training to employees, supervisors, and managers
  • Oversee and drive the success with the Safety Action Team (Safety Committee) at the facility. Monitor activity and ensure minutes and needed actions are being tracked
  • Assist in coordination and participate during morning safety huddle, document employee safety related suggestions and concerns
  • Coach employee(s) on behavioral concern or observations viewed in the field. These can be shared with entire team or individually as observations are made
  • Coordinates with managers, supervisors, and other employees to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions & practices throughout the plant
  • Approve and coordinate corrective action plans submitted by managers
  • Review plans and specifications for construction and installation of new machinery or equipment to ensure all safety requirements are met, including authority to sign-off/approve new and relocated machinery/equipment
  • Direct the installation of safety devices on machinery
  • Recommend and specify safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards
  • Conduct or direct testing of air quality, noise, temperature, and/or radiation levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Provide technical guidance on all environmental policies and regulations, including Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, air permitting management, Spill Prevention Control &Countermeasures, and other environmental plans as needed
  • Plan, coordinate and track all R3 exercises and follow up that action items are completed then document the results
  • Plan, coordinate, and track all (5S) Projects documenting results and ensuring sustainability
  • Collect and report all Near Miss/Potential Hazard (NM/PH) cards submitted and maintain action item list with regular follow up to ensure items are being addressed. Assist in solutions as needed
  • Coordinate and ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and aligned with corporate/site program
  • Attend needed Train the Trainer courses for required areas; crane/rigging, powered industrial vehicle, walking working surface, and First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Will perform other duties as assigned by Area Safety Manager

Education, Work Experience, Certifications, and Skills

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent experience preferred
  • At least 1 year in an EH&S role in a manufacturing or construction environment
  • Knowledge of Environmental regulations specifically in California
  • Experience in handling EHS compliance issues, including evaluating/interpreting OSHA and EPA regulations, NFPA and ANSI standards; with OSHA reporting and recordkeeping experience
  • Required skills include strong communication, technical writing, training, analytical, time management and organizational skill
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs
  • The ideal candidate will be self-driven; possess excellent interpersonal skills with all employee level
