As the community center of the University, the Illini Union draws together all members of the University with approximately 16,000 visits of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests on a daily basis. Job Summary
The position directs the operations of the Illini Union Rec Room and Quad Shop by setting priorities and managing human capital and financial resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Management
    • Provides leadership and day-to-day management for the Illini Union Rec Room and Quad Shop.
    • Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises permanent and student employees.
    • Establishes, implements, and evaluates operating procedures and staff training to achieve excellent hospitality service and operational efficiency.
    • Develops innovative business and programmatic opportunities, including night and weekend programs, via outreach and networking with campus departments, community, previous clients, and peers.
    • Responsible for developing marketing and promotion schedules for the operations.
    • Prepares regular reports and annual summary of operations.
    • Actively participates in regular meetings, staff retreats, work teams and special projects.
  • Financial Oversight
    • Oversees departmental budget development, financial management of resources and expenses, income goals, sales and promotions, pricing and cash handling related to the operations.
    • Manages and evaluates contracts with service providers and/or vendors; makes all expenditures within established Illini Union and University guidelines. Works with Illini Union Business Affairs and/or University's Purchasing Division as needed.
    • Selects products to be offered and services/programs to be offered within budgetary parameters.
    • Manages inventory levels for both locations using sales reports, inventory records, and turnover figures to maximize sales while maintaining adequate stock levels.
    • Prepares and submits all required financial reports.
  • Operations
    • Investigates and recommends new services/programs and/or products to respond to customer demand and to remain competitive with area offerings.
    • Collects and/or analyzes market research related to University of Illinois students, faculty, staff, and guests to determine appropriate product mix, programs, and service needs.
    • Participates in development and implementation of short and long-range strategic planning goals and assessment.
    • Coordinates efforts to maintain facilities through effective housekeeping, preventive maintenance programs, equipment repair and replacement, etc.
    • Maintains equipment records to ensure working equipment for efficiency and performance in all areas.
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates safety, security, and sanitation procedures for the operations.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Additional Physical Demands
    Weekend and evening work will be required based on operational need.
    Incumbent will have direct contact with university affiliated individuals and the general public.
    Position supervises full-time and student employees.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or other closely related fields.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience managing a recreational center, food and beverage operation, bowling/billiards operation, or similar setting.

    Specialty Factors
    Three years of professional business, financial, and/or managerial work experience in a retail and/or recreational services.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and coordination of people and resources
  • Ability to identify trends and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Knowledge of marketing/promotions for retail operations is preferred
  • Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Business Administrative Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/26/2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.
