Departmentof Radiation Oncology RESEARCH TECHINICIAN II

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

The Departmentof Radiation Oncology at Duke University is seeking motivated researchtechnicians to assist in our efforts to fi nd better treatments for patientswith cancer. The position is intended t o provide experimental support for workin the Reitman Lab. The goal of theReitman Lab (https://radonc.duke.edu/resear ch/reitman-lab ) is to make discoveries that guide thedesig n of improved treatment strategies for children and adults with braintum ors. We leverage molecular biology techniques, genetically engineeredmou se models and cancer genomic approachesto carry out our work. Weare in terested in several research themes, including:

(1) using primary genetically engineered mousemodels of pediatr ic and adult brain tumors to study mechanisms oftumorigenesis, mechanism s of treatment resistance, and candidate therapeuticstrategies

(2) identifyingnew therapeutic dependencies associated with f requent cancer mutations

(3) identifyingmethods to i ncrease the efficacy and decrease toxicity of radiation therapy forbrain tumor patients

(4) usingsingle cell genomic techniqu es to understand tumor heterogeneity, to definebrain tumor lineage of or igin, and to improve diagnosis and treatment for braintumor patients

The hiring laboratoryis embedded wi thin a rich environment including numerous research technicians,PhD and MD/PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty.

Competitiveapplicants will have received an u ndergraduate degree by the start ofemployment, will have prior experienc e in lab research, will be intellectuallypassionate and able to display scientific initiative.

O ccupational Summary (duties may includesome or all of the following):

1) Mainta in an organized and complete labnotebook of experiments that you perform and any mouse colony work you perform.

2) /span>Perform PCR, RT-PCR and Western blots tocharacterize cell lines, t umor tissues, and mouse tissues.

3) F or some of our experiments, a group ofmice will need to be assessed each day including weekends. This responsibility will be share d betweenyou and other members of the lab.

4) Meet or communicate by e-mail with yourphysician-scientist sup ervisor on a regular basis to plan experiments,troubleshoot problems, an d discuss results.

5) Participate in regular lab meetings todiscuss results or articles in the literature.

6) Assist in recruiting new lab members bytelling them about the lab and your research.

7) Help maintain reagents or equipment in thelaboratory with specific jobs (which might include tasks like making celldissociation b uffer, 70% ethanol, etc.).

8) Help pr ovide a collegial environment forthe laboratory.

9) Set up instruments, material and apparatusand operate sta ndard laboratory equipment required for specific tests.

10) Propagatecells in cell culture and perform in vitro viability ass ays and clonogenicassays.

11) Prepareculture media, c hemicals, reagents and solutions. Assist in the developmen t of new researchprocedures and techniques.

12) Reque stvacation 30 or more days in advance or upon discussion with the superv isor.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

None required above education/training requirement. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
