West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for a Research Scientist in the Department of Biochemistry.  

About the Opportunity

The newly hired person will join an exciting team of vision researchers in identifying mechanisms behind blindness and use this knowledge to generate novel ideas for treatments for vision loss in humans. We have been continuously funded for our research by the National Institutes of Health for the last two decades (https://reporter.nih.gov/search/KLfeDDZoiE20LqezTUXc-g/projects?projects=Active).  You will help manage a team of graduate students and technicians in this position. You will work with the principal investigator (PI) in the generation and maintenance of animal models for blindness. In addition, you will actively participate in the ongoing research including regular presentation of your research endeavors, helping PI in grant, protocol, and manuscript submission. What you’ll do:

  • Primary Role – Manage the team of grads students, techs including training them in day to day lab operations, ordering, etc
  • Generation and maintenance of mouse models for vision loss 
  • Support research team in investigating mechanisms behind blindness including conducting experiments as directed.
  • Ordering and stocking of chemicals including maintenance of inventories
  • Overall maintenance of the laboratory as a part of the team
  • Help PI in the preparation and submission of manuscripts, protocols, and proposals.


Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology or related field with 1-3 years of post doctoral experience; or Masters in Biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology or related field with 6-10 years of experience in research.
  • Expertise in molecular skills and animal (mouse) models preferred.
  • Ability to manage a large research group,
  • Experience working with mouse models,
  • Writing skills a must demonstrated by first author publications in a peer-reviewed journals
  • Knowledge and laboratory experience in general molecular biology techniques.
  • Skilled in DNA/RNA isolation from animal tissues and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
  • Knowledge of laboratory environment and appropriate procedures.
  • Ability to prepare reagents.
  • Ability to present scientific data both orally and visually.
  • Skilled at using computers and applicable programs/applications.
