Department Specific Functions

The laboratory of Dr. Kevin Van der Jeught at the University of Miami in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology seeks to recruit highly motivated candidates for a Research Associate 1, SOM to support research activities by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects.

Highlights:

Opportunity to be a part of a fast-paced lab and be involved in exciting projects to understand the tumor microenvironment in solid cancers and studies exploring novel immunotherapeutic strategies.

The major interests of the lab are discovering pathways and developing tools to improve current cancer immunotherapy treatments. The Research Associate 1, SOM will help with study recruitment and coordination activities. Carry out experiments as required. Coordinate and carry out shipments of laboratory reagents. Cleans, sanitizes, maintains and operates lab equipment. Maintains lab supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level. Places orders for supplies and verifies received supplies accuracy. Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

Participates in the publication of significant results. Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice. Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research. Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

Performs a variety of routine assays (such as: flow cytometry staining, sample preparation, ELISA, Western Blot, Tissue Culture, PCR, qPCR, cloning and other molecular biology techniques), buffer preparation, tests, and studies (including mouse studies: colony breeding, genotyping, basic mouse handlings). Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong experience in cell signaling and molecular biology techniques:
    • Western blot, Co-IP
    • Cloninig
    • Gene editing via shRNA/siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9
    • RNA-sequencing
  • Previous flow cytometry experience
  • Mouse and human cell culture; both primary cells as well as cell lines.
  • ELISA, Elispot or Luminex-based assays for cytokine/chemokine assessments.
  • Immunofluorescent staining, imaging and fluorescent microscopy.
