The University of Wisconsin–Madison was founded in 1848 and is the oldest and largest public university in the state. The 933-acre main campus is located on the shores of Lake Mendota. Its current operating budget is $3.6 billion. With research and development expenditures of nearly $1.3 billion, UW–Madison ranks eighth in research and development expenditures among U.S. universities. The university is organized into 13 schools and colleges, which enrolled 35,184 undergraduate students, 9,993 graduate students, 2,046 special students, and 2,663 professional students in 2022. Its comprehensive academic program offers 288 undergraduate major and certificates, and over 250 master's, doctoral, and professional programs. UW–Madison is also categorized as a Doctoral University with the Highest Research Activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Facilities include 400 buildings with nearly 24 million gross square feet of space on the campus. UW–Madison manages over 13,000 acres of land throughout the state.

Wisconsin is a founding member of the Association of American Universities. As of 2020, 26 Nobel laureates and 2 Fields medalists have been associated with UW–Madison as alumni, faculty, or researchers. Additionally, as of November 2018, the current CEOs of 14 Fortune 500 companies have attended UW–Madison, the most of any university in the United States. The Wisconsin Badgers compete in 25 intercollegiate sports in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference and have won 30 national championships. Wisconsin students and alumni have won 50 Olympic medals (13 gold, 24 silver, and 13 bronze).

The provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW–Madison is the deputy to the chancellor in the university's overall academic leadership and administrative management. The provost acts as the chief executive officer of the institution in the chancellor's absence. Primary responsibilities include oversight of all academic program and budget planning involving 13 schools and colleges; faculty and staff development and personnel matters; and oversight of the following areas: enrollment management, including undergraduate recruitment and admissions, student financial aid, and registrar; teaching and learning; diversity and inclusion (in partnership with the chancellor); extension; public media; information technology (in collaboration with the vice chancellor for finance and administration); libraries; and the International Division. The provost also oversees a number of specific units including Academic Planning and Institutional Research, the Office of Strategic Consulting (in partnership with the vice chancellor for finance and administration), the Ombuds Office, the Chazen Museum of Art, the Division of the Arts, the Global Health Initiative, the Office of Sustainability (in collaboration with the vice chancellor for finance and administration), and the UW Press UW–Madison's incoming provost will be expected to partner with the chancellor to envision the campus's future, advance academic excellence, and ensure the university's financial strength and resilience. The provost will support and enable the success of the deans and academic units as well as strengthen centralized infrastructure and initiatives to advance the university. The provost will support and advocate for the needs of its diverse body of students. Underpinning all of this work will be vigorous leadership in advancing an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

UW–Madison seeks a leader with the intellectual vision, collegial and collaborative leadership style, strategic and operational leadership, and energy and integrity to inspire others to new levels of excellence. The incoming provost will have experience as an academic leader and will have participated in the processes of faculty appointment and promotion with a substantial record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will understand the distinctive character and mission of a land grant university and have a proven history of productive and collaborative relationships with various internal and external constituent groups, transparent leadership, and building consensus. Candidates must have an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and the requisite scholarship and teaching experience for an appointment as a tenured full professor at UW–Madison.
