Zoetis is a global Animal Health Company which offers a unique product portfolio supporting veterinarians in their animal care including prediction, detection, prevention, and treatment.

Our diagnostic division is rapidly growing, and we are seeking a highly motivated, self-driven and team-oriented leader (Principal / Sr Principal Scientist) to support our teams of highly qualified scientists in sustaining our large on-market product portfolio and developing innovative state-of-the-art pipeline products.

Please Note: This is a hybrid position based in Union City, CA.

Position Summary

You will be working in a fast paced, agile, and fast-growing team. The position is in Union City, California, but you will be part of a larger global assay development organization with teams in Kalamazoo, MI, Durham, NC and Farum, Denmark. As we operate in a highly matrixed cross-functional environment, you will be exposed to many different functions, each playing a critical role in the development and maintenance of our product portfolio.

The position is a leadership role that holds both project and people leadership responsibilities.

You will be managing our large on-market assay portfolio which includes both human and animal products. The product portfolio is a clinical chemistry-based assay portfolio to run on our point-of-care analyzers; you will be creating positive customer experiences through your excellent management of product performance improvement projects, claim extensions and product problem investigations directly related to customer complaints. You will furthermore act as a Subject Matter Expert for our manufacturing colleagues and during quality audits.

You will be leading a team of 1-2 junior scientists, ideally growing this team as our on-market portfolio continues to expand. The expansion of the portfolio will include innovative clinical chemistry assays, as well as other assay technologies such as Immunochemistry, Molecular technologies, Nanotechnologies, other.

While focus is on sustaining on-market products, you will continuously be involved in pipeline product development. We operate fluently between pipeline development and on-market portfolio management.

This role has the potential to grow into a leadership role with multiple teams and projects reporting to you, including both pipeline development and on-market sustainability projects.

Ideally, you are a bench scientist with a passion for product development and team leadership. You have a background in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or molecular biology and you are familiar with systematic trouble shooting tools (5 whys, fishbone, fault tree) and design control for diagnostic assay development. You are driven by for-purpose study designs, DOE designs, V&V, experimental execution, data analysis, interpretation, and documentation. You are confident at executing complex data analysis and preparing figures for internal and / or external publications. You prioritize timely communication on project progress to team, peers and management. And you love working with and developing your direct reports and other junior colleagues through coaching and mentoring both technically and with regards to talent development and career growth.

You are a strong team player, highly organized, a strong communicator, hypothesis and data driven, detail oriented and willing to learn and explore new scientific venues as we continue to sustain our large on-market assay portfolio and deliver state-of-the-art diagnostic products.

Technical Skills Requirements
  • Executing complex data analysis and preparing figures for internal and/or external publication
  • Authoring, implementing, and maintaining training documents and SOPs for the On-Market assay team, in line with QMS and regulatory requirements
  • Solid technical understanding of chemistry, immunochemistry and / or Molecular assay designs
  • Track record of effectively managing complex studies from design to launch
  • Solid understanding of - and experience with - data analysis and statistical tools such as JMP, R, and / or Python

Education and Experience
  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology with 5 years of experience in commercial diagnostic assay development with demonstrated growing leadership responsibilities.
  • M.S. or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology plus 10 years of experience in commercial diagnostic assay development with demonstrated growing leadership responsibilities.

The following base pay range reflects the anticipated base pay for this position if a selected candidate were to be located in California. Base pay may vary based on location and other factors.

Base Pay Range: $130K - $150K

This position is eligible for short-term incentive compensation. The position is also eligible for long-term incentive.
