The Role:

As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and nonviral gene therapies. It is our intention to be an industry leader in genomic medicines.

mGx seeks an experienced, curious and innovation-driven RNA biochemist or engineer to help power efforts to develop and optimize gene editing medicines. The successful candidate will leverage his/her/their expertise in RNA biochemistry and RNA structure to engineer the oligonucleotide components of novel gene editing systems that correct the mutations that underlie genetic disease to have improved activity and efficacy through rational design and/or directed evolution. Demonstrated ability to think creatively and collaborate cross-functionally to drive innovative science is a must. This role will have the opportunity to make an impact through establishing key RNA engineering pipelines and biochemical assays for mGx gene editing efforts and contributing to building the team and culture for this new initiative.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Design, optimize and execute in vitro experiments to evaluate oligonucleotide components of gene editing systems, using various next-generation sequencing approaches, binding studies, and enzyme activity assays
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Moderna Genomics team to assess function of novel RNAs in a variety of organisms and human cell types
  • Develop and drive novel strategies to improve the design of RNA-based gene editor components
  • Manage CROs and support external collaboration activities
  • Liaise with the broader Moderna RNA design platform
  • Clearly communicate conclusions to internal and/or external stakeholders

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • A Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or equivalent field
  • Significant expertise in RNA engineering, RNA structure prediction and design, and/or the use and manipulation of chemically modified oligonucleotides.
  • Experience with gene editing and in vitro RNA biochemistry assays is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific issues in a logical and coherent manner
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a cross-functional team

Here's What We'll Bring to the Table:

  • 16 weeks of 100% paid parental leave for all new parents
  • 16 weeks 100% paid family caregiver leave
  • 20 weeks 100% paid medical leave
  • Eligible for "Moderna Month" (one month paid sabbatical after five years of service and eligible for additional one month paid sabbatical every 3 years thereafter)
  • Adoption assistance and discounts to local childcare centers, as well as access to care.com
  • 401k (traditional and Roth offered) with 50% match on first 6% deferred. Match is vested immediately
  • A suite of Moderna paid insurance coverage, including: life insurance, short-term and long-term disability
  • Voluntary legal assistance plan
  • 15 days' vacation and 7 sick days per year, in addition to a discretionary winter shut down and 11 company paid holidays (includes 2 floating holidays)

About Moderna

In 10 years since its inception,Modernahas transformed from a science research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across six modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for both clinical and commercial production at scale and at unprecedented speed.Modernamaintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and auto-immune diseases.Modernahas been named a top biopharmaceutical employer bySciencefor the past seven years.
