Responsibilities
The Practical Nurse Extern (PNE) provides basic care under the direction and supervision of a licensed or registered professional nurse. The PNE role is designed to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students to evolve towards professional practice through the acquisition of basic clinical skills and advancing their knowledge related to patient care. PNEs promote a positive patient experience by partnering with the patient, family and other health care providers to provide excellence in customer service and assistance with patient flow and the delivery of safe, quality care.
The PNE assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally competent care by performing basic patient care functions, i.e., vital signs, history taking, preparing patients for provider examination, patient communication and other duties deemed necessary. The PNE must be able to work in a fast-paced environment which requires multi-tasking activities and ongoing communication with the care team. The PNE must be able to perform under stressful conditions with a compassionate, respectful, and helpful manner and must be able to take direction from a variety of care providers.
