The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a Harvard affiliate, is looking for exceptional candidates to join the research group of Dr. Hamed Khalili in the Clinical and Translational Epidemiology Unit (CTEU) at Mongan Institute. The successful candidate will join a research program focused on population-based and translational research efforts in gastrointestinal diseases. We seek to understand the lifestyle and environmental risk factors for chronic gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases.

This Postdoctoral Research Fellow position offers the opportunity to work directly with a team of Principal Investigators (PIs) in the CTEU/Mongan Institute and the Division of Gastroenterology at MGH. Responsibilities will include developing research protocols, compiling data, conducting statistical analyses, validating programming and reporting output in numerical and graphic formats under the supervision of the PI. In addition to traditional epidemiologic studies, the candidate will work with a variety of omics data (e.g. metagenome, metabolomics, etc). The candidate will need a thorough understanding of data/information quality principles as well as be comfortable with data manipulation in large databases. Candidate must be self-motivated, independent in task completion, and comfortable accepting feedback and guidance from colleagues. The ability to work well in a team is a must, as well as the maturity to manage numerous research studies simultaneously.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develops and designs data collection instruments
  • Calculates sample size and selects appropriate analytical procedures
  • Develops analytical plans for ongoing projects and discusses approach with PI
  • Conducts primary data analyses using SAS and R
  • Previous experience with Python programming is strongly encouraged
  • Reports and summarizes analysis results of a research project by creating graphs, tables, and charts. Interprets and conveys results to PI and research team
  • Assists with statistical analysis and results sections in manuscript preparation
  • Designs ad hoc reports requested by administrators, for example the tabulation of gender and race/ethnicity of populations served, and summary data required for IRB renewals
  • Conducts quality control of programming and statistical models
  • Assists with other research-related tasks as needed

Skills and Competencies Required:
  • PhD degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or public health (MD candidates may be considered if they have had at least 3 years of full-time research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics or other related fields)
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistical methods, including survival analysis
  • Strong experience in statistical programming and ability to use software systems like SAS or STATA, ability to develop macros and do statistical computing using R is a plus
  • Experience working with large databases
  • Experience with working in a cluster computing environment
  • Experience in propensity score analyses, interrupted time series, and instrumental variable techniques
  • Experience with analyses of genetics, microbiome and metabolomics data is a plus but not required
