The Department of Chemistry is seeking a 12-month, post-doctoral research fellow to conduct research on the development of novel catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis. The initial appointment will be for one year and is full-time and benefitted, with potential for renewal for a second year, pending annual review of performance and continued availability of funding.

The Department of Chemistry in Abbott Hall at UND is well equipped for ongoing research performed by individual faculty and is funded by external funding from the National Science Foundation, ND EPSCoR, PRF ACS and other agencies. Abbott Hall houses 29 laboratories and classrooms, over 30 faculty and student offices including space for modern teaching and research facilities. The lab has access to several computing resources including at UND Computational Research Center.

Duties & Responsibilities

The postdoctoral scholar will explore a diverse range of research directions and topics, encompassing but not limited to electro catalysis, thermal catalysis, nanomaterial synthesis, single-atom catalysis, and clean energy source conversion. Responsibilities for this role involve catalyst synthesis, experimental design, catalyst aging, reactor testing, and catalyst characterization. Proficiency in synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) technique for catalyst characterization is preferred. Additionally, scholars will engage in the study of reaction mechanisms and related tasks.

Minimum Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field, degree must be conferred by start date.
  • Demonstrated expertise in synthesizing metal and metal oxide catalysts, conducting catalytic activity tests, and employing standard characterization techniques.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. This position supports visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with heterogeneous catalysis, electro catalysis, thermal-catalysis, nanomaterial synthesis, and single-atom catalysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with instruments including Mass Spec, FTIR (transmission mode), GC/MS etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with microscopy and spectroscopy techniques such as TEM, SEM, in situ DRIFTS (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, XPS, XAS (XANES and EXAFS) etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3-RR), electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), CO2 hydrogenation, oxidative dehydrogenation of methane/propane with CO2, etc.
  • Mentorship experience of undergraduate and/or graduate researchers.
  • Strong writing ability as demonstrated by publication record and fellowship/grant application.
To Apply

To assure full consideration, applications must be received by March 29, 2024 and include the following materials:
