Position Summary

The Medical Faculty Associates is looking for a physician assistant for the upcoming HIV prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 094 study scheduled to begin in early 2021 at the GWU clinical research site. HPTN094 will examine the use of a mobile health unit to deliver integrated health services to people who inject drugs (PWID) in Washington, DC. In particular the study will be evaluating the efficacy of initiating medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in PWIDs on the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-positive participants or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-negative participants. All study procedure including consenting, enrollment, delivery of the study intervention and follow up study visits taking place on the mobile unit. Clinical activities will include providing evaluation and care for MOUD, performing testing for hepatitis A, B, C, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, initiating ART treatment for HIV-positive participants not already in care, providing PrEP for HIV-negative participants, treatment of STIs, and providing medical services for other medical conditions than can be managed in the mobile unit.

Qualifications

Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications;

  • Must fulfill the criteria for licensure and certification as a physician assistant in the District of Columbia
  • Experience in clinic and/or providing care in a mobile health unit
  • Willingness to provide care in a mobile health unit setting
  • Ideally would have clinical experience in infectious diseases and research
  • DATA 2000 X waiver certified for 30 or 100 patients or willingness to complete training to get X waived for 30 patients to prescribe buprenorphine for MOUD
  • Follow clinical and administrative procedures as outlined in the study protocol
  • Interact with research participants in a friendly, prompt, and caring manner, maintaining confidentiality and respect at all times
  • Obtain complete medical and psychosocial histories
  • Performs medical and health care procedures as laid out in the study protocol
  • Willingness to work as a part of a research team in data collection and quality control activities.
