How you can make a bigger difference:

The Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) is a SAMHSA grant funded program. Its purpose is to enable the Community Behavioral Programs and Residential Programs in the Bronx support and restore the delivery of clinical services that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program effectively meets the needs of children/youth with serious emotional disturbance (SED), adults with serious mental illness (SMI) and individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders.

The Peer Specialist engages participants in peer-based services to identify and overcome barriers to engagement in treatment and community integration and utilizes a peer relationship to foster connection, trust, understanding and validation.

The responsibilities of the Peer Specialist include:

  • Individual meetings with participants to help them address issues associated with substance use, mental health symptoms/symptom management and/or medication management; (re)engage with treatment providers, family and social relationships; assist in engaging in activities of daily living, independent living or supported housing
  • Providing emotional and practical support to participants as they engage in behavioral health treatment
  • Fostering and maintaining cooperative and collaborative relationships with community providers and network members
  • Establishing collaborative working relationships with referring treatment teams and other partners and assisting participants with moving through systems of care
  • Advocating with/for program participants to achieve personal goals and address barriers such as fear, stigma and communication disparities with community providers and supports
  • Providing on-call after hour crisis intervention services when needed to participants and their support network
  • Attending and participating in team meetings and supervisory sessions
  • Developing short-term person-centered treatment plans to assist participants with achieving treatment goals
  • Monitoring and recording participant's progress and modify plan according to needs and preference
  • Timely and accurate documentation of participant information within electronic health record
  • Attending all required in-service training and staff development activities
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
  • All other applicable duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

The Jewish Board is currently looking for talented Peer Specialists of all cultures, religions, races, and gender expressions with the following qualifications:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent or higher
  • Past or current participant of behavioral health, substance use services or homeless services preferred
  • New York State Certified Peer Specialist preferred or required completion of an internship or comparable training in peer advocacy
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use one's personal story and role model recovery in a way that promotes personal growth and empowerment
  • Knowledge of behavioral health systems and behavioral health regulations
  • Knowledge of treatment, rehabilitation, and community support programs as they relate to participants/ families
  • This position requires travel throughout New York City; ability to independently use public transportation
