About the Opportunity:

Our Packaging Engineer is responsible for the design of packing solutions for Life Fitness Cardio and Strength products as well as accessories and field service spare parts. They will evaluate current packaging design and create cost-improvement strategies for both existing and new packaging designs as well as ensure that the packaging solutions are functional, create minimal waste, and are cost-effective. They will work cross-functionally to coordinate the packaging design efforts with the internal creative graphic designers, industrial designers, product-development engineers, and suppliers for new and existing projects. They will determine the need for and select any required machinery used for specific packaging operations performed in Life Fitness manufacturing and/or distribution facilities.

**This is a hybrid position based out of Owatonna, MN, or Ramsey, MN - M/F remote and T-Th in office collaboration days**

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and improve existing packaging designs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinating external packaging testing to ISTA standards.
  • Analyze plans to ensure that they are feasible within resource constraints.
  • Conduct new packaging design rollout and training for the team lead and production workers.
  • Participate in new product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market.
  • Participate in projects that drive value and loss elimination.
  • Minimize packaging material scrap, product scrap, and product giveaway.
  • Demonstrate strong troubleshooting skills using continuous improvement techniques.
  • Keep abreast of developments across appropriate packaging and manufacturing technologies.
  • Participate in periodic business review meetings with external packaging partners.
  • Obtain resources (funding, staff, materials, equipment) necessary to complete key projects.
  • Work very closely with suppliers and cultivate relationships with key commodity suppliers.
  • Provide verbal, and written reports and presentations to senior management.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations to product schedules to run as efficiently as possible.
  • Work with packaging design partners and evaluate their designs and performance.
  • Work independently and handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Drive improvements through the change management process, including justifying changes in terms of quality improvement or direct cost savings.
  • Balance tradeoff decisions in new product design with input from all relevant stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in package engineering, mechanical engineering, or 5 years of equivalent experience.
  • Experience within a manufacturing or engineering organization.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD design tools.
  • Strict attention to detail and dedication to continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Familiar with scripting and writing work instructions, protocols, and procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with New Product Development processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Some experience with Product and/or Environmental Standards and Regulations.
  • Nice to have experience with ArtiosCAD and Adobe Illustrator or similar.
  • Some travel required.
