Description
Under limited supervision, conducts basic eye exams on inmates confined to a correctional facility, schedules appointments with optometrists/ophthalmologists, fits/orders/adjusts/ repairs eyeglasses. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating 10 institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Location of position: Lincoln, Nebraska

Work schedule: M - F (20 hours per week)
Examples of Work
Conducts eye exams on all inmates entering the assigned institution and annual exams on all inmates having a documented need. Schedules on-site appointments for inmates with an optometrist. Coordinates between facility and optometry diagnostic service vendors to attain timely and technically adequate service. Initiates inmate files and fills out forms, labels and reports. Dispenses eye-wear and other eye related products. Fits, orders, adjusts and repairs eyeglass frames. Maintains equipment and tool control inventories. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on equipment. Reviews all Inmate Interview Requests and responds within 48 hours. Schedules emergency travel orders for contract ophthalmologist and community hospitals. Assists NDCS medical records department with records requests and filing.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIRED: High school education or equivalent and experience or training in office support functions.

OTHER: Successful completion of background check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Ability to: communicate effectively; follow instructions; use a computer; establish and maintain files; properly use equipment and tools of the job; document inmate care; complete all required training.
