Job Info

As a Mechanical or Opto-Mechanical Engineer at Meta Reality Labs - Research (RL-R), you will help research, design, build, and test state-of-the-art solutions, mechanisms, and prototypes for next generation Augmented Reality consumer products that will create transformative user experiences. You will become part of a hardware-centric research team exploring creative new technical solutions from initial concept development, prototype design, analytical modeling, tooling design, and fast iterative prototyping. The position will support multiple research areas as the mechanical engineering expert in an R&D environment to prove initial viability and firmly establish the technology. The position will also be responsible for technical management of subject matter expert commercial partners. The role may help in transferring the technology to product design teams, but will not be involved in design of the high-volume product. The role will require broad Mechanical Engineering knowledge and the ability to dive into new technical areas. We want people who work well in cross-functional teams; can brainstorm big ideas, help chart direction in environments with high ambiguity, work in unexplored technology areas, and are able to drive a concept into working prototypes for proof-of-concept and performance testing. Starting with a sound mechanical or opto-mechanical engineering background, the candidate must be willing to become a quick expert in a new area by quickly build new prototypes using novel materials and/or by integrating structures in new ways.

Opto-Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Design and ownership of novel electro-mechanical and electro-optical devices including prototyping, testing, and optimization
  • Prepare and present trade studies, design reviews, and project status updates to research team members
  • Design of benchtop test systems and head mounted prototypes
  • Explore and develop novel low volume processing and assembly methods from scratch. Find and partner with vendors specializing in needed areas
  • Miniature actuator selection and precision mechanism design
  • Designing custom test set-ups for polymer film & membrane physical property testing
  • Innovate and patent new ideas around AR and VR mechanical and optical systems
  • Integration of optical components, sensors, and actuators into prototype products
  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineers in physical electrical systems layout definition including defining compact PCBA's, flexible circuits, wire routing and connectorization
  • Design optical, lamination, and assembly fixturing and tooling
  • Guiding research specialists to the quickest mechanical solution to understand feasibility or performance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • SolidWorks CAD experience or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience in Mechanical or Opto-ME engineer role, with subsystem or product ownership
  • Experience in data acquisition and testing
  • FEA modeling static structural, thermal and dynamic analysis of mechanical component or system performance
  • GD&T experience and proficiency with tolerance analysis
  • Experience designing, building, and testing prototypes
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical or Opto-Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with precision mechanism design
  • Experience in electromechanical systems and components

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in DFM and establishing manufacturing processes
  • Experience scoping new projects and designing in high-ambiguity environment where requirements are unknown
  • Experience designing for human interaction and use, ergonomics, anthropometrics
  • Experience balancing engineering rigor with speed appropriate to the project phase
  • Experience with control systems, LabVIEW or MATLAB
  • Experience with low volume (prototype) plastic parts - printing, casting, dip molding, bonding, ultrasonic welding, vacuum forming
  • Experience with optics and collaborating with optical engineers
