Job Info

As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer at Meta, you will take a critical role in developing next generation AR systems. You will become part of a team translating new concepts through mechanical design and fast iterative prototyping into products. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and then mature the design to high-volume consumer product solutions. We are looking for someone with a product mindset to join the optical combiners development team. The candidate will be responsible for the opto-mechanical design of critical display elements (waveguides) that have a direct impact on future AR products at Meta. Additionally, the candidate will participate in developing associated manufacturing processes that solve complex design challenges. This will be a technical lead role where the individual will work closely with optical, mechanical, product design, process, simulation, reliability, and material science engineers. Additional collaboration with project managers, product-operations, and international suppliers will be required to develop designs / processes / tools from the concept stage to engineering validation builds. We work at a fast pace with a group of highly self-motivated individuals. The candidate should demonstrate a strong ability to continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise in new technology for AR display systems and related design, process, and manufacturability topics.

Opto-Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:

  • From concept to completion, design the opto-mechanical elements of waveguides in collaboration with internal and external cross functional partners that meet mechanical, optical, and reliability requirements
  • Drive end-to-end discussions on waveguide process down-selection, prototyping, equipment, and tooling for high precision manufacturing and assembly
  • Drive design and DFM reviews of waveguides related to: mechanical control outlines, mechanical and optical interfaces, dimensional and optical specifications and tolerances, cosmetics, and product performance
  • Drive FMEA, failure analysis, tolerance analysis, gauge R&R, and the GD&T activities supporting product scalability
  • Support process validation studies and proof-of-concept waveguide builds
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments that inform design decisions and process development
  • Work closely with external equipment manufacturers, part suppliers, and integrators to support technology deployment and product development
  • Apply engineering expertise in the areas of opto-mechanics, precision manufacturing, metrology, and tooling design
  • Drive vendors and CMs to provide data analysis and reports of design and process performance
  • Drive in-field failure analysis of performance gaps of equipment
  • Document best practices, SOPs, and cost models by working closely with various cross functional teams

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Opto mechanical background with proven working knowledge of: mechanical design as it relates to optical performance, precision engineering and manufacturing, and manufacturing process development of opto-mechanical components/systems.
  • 5+ years of experience using 3D CAD software to work on large assemblies in a document controlled environment
  • Working knowledge of GD&T standards, dimensional metrology, statistics, and their application to process and design controls in high volume manufacturing
  • Experience employing both traditional and rapid manufacturing techniques to create high precision components and assemblies
  • Knowledge of designing for low particle environments/cleanrooms
  • Knowledge of optical component/module mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bonding
  • Mechanical and optical testing and analysis experience (FEA, ray tracing, reliability testing, materials testing, statistical analysis, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS, PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of image processing and optical-display metrics, such as MTF, contrast, luminance, uniformity etc.
  • Experience with design and prototyping of head-mounted optical systems and/or bench-top optical setups
  • Experience in consumer electronics product development and manufacturing
  • Experience with dimensional metrology equipment such as CMMs, OMMs, and interferometers
  • Knowledge of behavior of materials (including brittle materials) and structural modeling/optimization experience
  • Experience with product lifecycle management systems and document control
  • Familiar with optical system testing, data/statistical analysis
  • 5+ years experience working on mechanical designs of optical systems (lens assemblies, cameras, metrology instruments, illuminators, displays, lasers, mirrors, MEMS, etc.)
  • Experience working with international equipment vendors and international contract manufacturers
  • Data processing capabilities using Matlab, R, Python, etc
  • Experience using NX and/or SolidWorks preferred
