SUMMARY:

Supervises nursing staff and provides direct patient care. Responsible for Quality Improvement program, including maintenance of AAAHC accreditation. Assists the Medical Director and Assistant Director of Operations in SHC administrative operations. Serves as Nursing representative to Governing Body. This position requires a team minded approach to problem solving and frequent collaboration with University of Richmond campus and community partners. The Nursing Supervisor maintains high visibility in the department to monitor staff effectiveness and enhance communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nursing Administration

Operations:

  • Manages student immunization compliance program for the University in compliance with Virginia State Law and accepted immunization standards
  • Establishes work schedules, approves time, conducts supervisee annual reviews, and orients new clinical staff
  • Inventories and orders medical supplies
  • Ensures credentialing for nursing staff

Technology:
  • Maintains EHR software proficiency
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements
  • Trains SHC staff users at regular intervals
  • Serves as clinical arena EHR liaison with systems administrator
  • Provides daily support for clinical EHR end users

Administrative:
  • Maintains OSHA compliance; organizes staff training and maintains documentation.
  • Directs ongoing policy and procedure review and development
  • Assists with Emergency Preparedness Planning
  • Ensures professional development opportunities are available for nursing staff
  • Serves as nursing representative of the SHC Governing Body
  • Assists with department budget

Quality Improvement
  • Manages planning, implementation, and documentation for Quality Assurance program activities, including the Infection Control program
  • Ensures compliance with all University assessment and accreditation requirements
  • Manages AAAHC maintenance of accreditation compliance

Clinical Nursing
  • Provides oversight for patient assessment, triage, treatment and education in a primary care medical practice serving the students of University of Richmond
  • Provides nursing coverage as needed:
    • Obtains detailed health histories and performs physical assessments on patients; treats acute/chronic medical problems, as per physician-approved protocol.
    • Prepares equipment and assists physicians during examinations and treatments.
    • Performs evaluation of new and existing patients to determine priority and suitability of treatment and/or need for modifications.
    • Administers prescribed medications, applies sterile dressings, performs phlebotomy, and monitors vital signs, including TB skin tests, immunizations, allergy and other injections and other treatments, as ordered by the physician.
    • Assists patients and caregivers with educational needs, problem resolution, health management, and short-term counseling regarding health-related topics.
    • Obtains and prepares specimens for in-house and outpatient lab testing.
    • Maintains confidentiality of patient records through compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Ongoing participation in educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional skills to maintain current standards of practice/licensure
  • Other duties as assigned based on the needs of the Student Health Center

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Comprehensive (complete mastery and understanding) knowledge of:
    • patient assessment and triage procedures
    • clinical operations and procedures
    • appropriate procedures and standards for the administration of medications
  • Thorough (advanced knowledge of subject matter) knowledge of:
    • Adolescent and young adult growth and development
    • Electronic Health Record
    • Minor medical procedures performed in an outpatient setting
    • Phlebotomy techniques
    • CLIA waved laboratory testing
  • Demonstrated CPR certification (within 2 weeks of hire date) and proficiency in use of an AED

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution required
  • Current RN licensure in good standing in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or valid Nurse Licensure Compact) required, or ability to obtain licensure in Virginia prior to start date
  • Active nursing experience in outpatient primary care/ambulatory care setting required
  • Supervisory experience (1-2 years) preferred
  • Experience working with learners in a clinical setting preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in adolescent medicine/ college health preferred

WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; occasional evenings/weekends
