The Nursing Practice Specialist (NPS)is a master's prepared nurse with an area of specialization who promotes competent, compassionate and professional nursing care for patients/families across the continuum. The role integrates program development, clinical expertise and quality outcomes management and includes patient care, teaching, consultation and research. The NPS is authorized to provide health care services to individuals within their clinical scope according to acuity and based on episodic circumstances. Drawing on their expertise in the acute clinical environment, the NPS will develop educational programs, advise clinical decision-making, manage quality outcomes and participate in research activities. Responsibilities also include patient care in the clinical environment, health promotion, disease prevention, health education, counseling and making referrals to other members of the health care team, in addition to forming a diagnosis and management and treatment of illness and disease within his/her specialty certification and legal scope of practice. The NPS may provide these services to those experiencing acute or chronic conditions, illness, trauma or other-life threatening event. Specific duties for the Delirium NPS role include:

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Nurse Specialist group to articulate evidenced based standards for delirium education for nursing.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional leadership colleagues (Physicians/Advanced Practice Providers, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Nutrition and Social Work) to engage their support for the delirium initiative.
  • Partner with the unit-based nursing leadership and the interprofessional teams to implement evidenced based delirium assessment and interventions for patients.
  • Provide delirium consultation to nursing and provider teams for patients experiencing severe delirium.
  • Ensure nursing representation throughout MGH and MGB in appropriate work groups


Qualifications
Clinical Nurse Specialist Requirements
a. Graduation from a graduate degree program with a clinical practicum designed to prepare the graduate for practice as a CNS that is approved by a national accrediting organization for academic programs acceptable to the Board; and
b. Successful completion of, at minimum, core content at the graduate level in advanced assessment, advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacotherapeutics.
c. Current CNS certification granted by a Board recognized certifying organization

d. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

a. Master's degree in Nursing.

b. Relevant professional experience in clinical nursing specialty.
c. Certification in specialty area, if available, desired.
d. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
