The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics department of Radiology is seeking Nuclear Pharmacist to provide patient-oriented service that embodies the scientific knowledge and professional judgement required to improve and promote health through assurance of the safe and efficacious use of radioactive drugs for diagnosis and therapy.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and dispense radioactive drugs and devices in accordance with physician orders and in compliance with Federal and State regulations and Departmental policies
  • Perform appropriate quality control tests on radiopharmaceuticals in compliance with Federal and State regulations, professional practice standards, and Departmental policies.
  • Perform appropriate quality assurance tests on instruments and equipment in compliance with Federal and State regulations, professional practice standards, and Departmental policies.
  • Maintain records of all transactions, monitoring and test results, and other documentation in compliance with Federal and State regulations, professional practice standards and University and Departmental policies.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of radiopharmaceuticals and supplies, storing under proper conditions to ensure security, radiation safety, and stability.
  • Procure radiopharmaceuticals and supplies in compliance with Federal and State regulations and University and Departmental policies.
  • Receive and unpack radiopharmaceuticals and supplies in compliance with Federal and State regulations and University and Departmental policies.
  • Pack and ship expired radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive sources in compliance with Federal and State regulations and University and Departmental policies.
  • Store and dispose of radioactive waste, hazardous chemical waste, and biologic waste in compliance with Federal and State regulations and University and Departmental policies.
  • Participate in provision of Departmental inservice education and training programs, and in the education and training of students, residents, and others.
  • Assist in research and other special projects, including radiopharmacy activities associated with Investigational New Drugs and clinical trials.
  • Provide information to physicians, other healthcare personnel, patients, and others regarding choice of radiopharmaceutical, dosage, side effects, radiation exposure, drug interactions, purposeful drug interventions, and other radiopharmaceutical information.
  • Assist in the review and revision of the UIHC Formulary and Handbook, Departmental policies and procedures, and other documents.
  • Assist in planning Departmental goals, preparing Departmental budgets, and determining radiopharmaceutical supply charges.
  • Serve as liaison between the Department and other areas such as UIHC Pharmacy Department and the University's Environmental Health and Safety Office.
  • Participate in preparation for and during inspections by various entities including Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, and The Joint Commission.

Supervision received:

General supervision is received from the Chief Nuclear Pharmacist and from the Director of Nuclear Medicine.

Supervision exercised:

Functional supervision may be exercised over assigned Nuclear Medicine technologists and students.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree is required.
  • Eligibility for or current license by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required.
  • Board Certification in Nuclear Pharmacy within 12 months of hire is required.
  • Recognition as an Authorized Nuclear Pharmacist by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Iowa Department of Public Health is required.
  • Two years' experience in nuclear pharmacy practice is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Active board certification in Nuclear Pharmacy is highly desirable.
  • Able to work independently, prioritize multiple stakeholders and tasks, manage details, and deliver results in an environment with competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others.
