Job Summary/Basic Function:
The NMR facility manager will have ultimate responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the department's 300 and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers, including the cyro- and other spectrometer probes. The individual will provide NMR support for campus-wide research and educational activities, which includes direct training of new users and instructing all chemistry majors in the operation of the NMR.
Department Overview:
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a Bachelor's and Master of Science degrees in Chemistry. Our faculty members participate and mentor Ph.D. graduate students in transdisciplinary programs including Materials Science and Engineering, Biomolecular Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Computing. As a Carnegie R2 ranked institution (Ph.D. granting, high research activity), we are dedicated to increasing high-impact research. Department research projects are currently funded via grants obtained from the NIH, NSF, and the USDA, among other agencies. Our faculty members conduct research in areas such as drug discovery, medicinal chemistry & medical devices, cosmochemistry, prebiotic chemistry, archaeological science, computational chemistry, enzymology and enzyme mechanisms, RNA and protein chemistry, and polymer chemistry.

Level Scope:
Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.
Essential Functions:

  • Operate, maintain, and manage logistics for NMR equipment and facility.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and research staff who are NMR users.
  • Provide broad support for NMR research applications, including small molecules, bio, and polymer NMR, as well as other liquids NMR applications as they arise.
  • Provide NMR support for academic laboratories and lectures.
  • Assist with the analysis, interpretation, and documentation of NMR data
  • Providing billing and reservation system support for the NMR facility.
  • Collaborate with entities outside of Boise State to build NMR research capacity and utilization in the region.
  • Periodically review the financial position of the NMR lab and drive a rate study with assistance from the university administration to update the instrument usage charges.
  • Participate in regular professional development as it pertains to the position.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for existing or new processes relevant to the position
  • Prepare complete documentation of research activities for reference purposes, including following applicable data management protocols.
  • Service on the departmental instrumentation committee and other department committees that pertain to the position.
  • Evaluate existing research techniques and recommend improvements to ensure quality and productivity.
  • Assist in the preparation of research proposals and reports.

  • Team player with an excellent work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and high intrinsic self-motivation to learn and work in the lab
  • A strong interest in teaching NMR to undergraduate and graduate students both in the pursuit of research and as a supporting role for advanced Chemistry labs
  • Actively work to encourage students to develop a better understanding of NMR
  • Ability to acquire accurate, reproducible data with a critical eye towards consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method in general
  • Scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience presenting research results in meetings, conferences, and seminars
  • Excellent project and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills
  • Advocate for safety and ethics in the workplace
  • Interest, experience, and/or ability to promote cultural competency and/or diversity
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of a Ph.D. degree or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline, with a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience (or equivalent research experience) with a demonstrated record of research productivity. A Master's degree or equivalent, plus at least 5 years of relevant post-master's professional work experience, or in rare instances, a Bachelor's degree or equivalent, plus at least 8 years of exceptional relevant professional experience also will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience managing a facility that includes instrumentation maintenance, training of users, and working with students enrolled in academic classes/laboratories. Salary and Benefits:
