Job Summary

This position will develop, design, implement, and support wired and wireless networks, and firewall infrastructure. Responsibilities include the following: consulting to determine client technical needs; diagnosing and resolving network and firewall problems; and managing network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Given specifications, develops, designs, documents, and implements new networks or modifications to existing networks or firewall infrastructure.
  • Configures firewall policies per customer requirements; works with clients to determine their firewall needs.
  • Configures network hardware and services for the network environment.
  • Supports connectivity services such as wireless and VoIP (voice over IP).
  • Analyzes workload, monitors capacity and performance, diagnoses, and resolves moderately complex network problems.
  • Conducts trending and analysis of traffic patterns and makes recommendations.
  • Responsible for network outage resolution, inclusive of routing, switching, firewall, wireless, or DNS/DHCP.
  • Coordinates the installation of network hardware, communications wiring, telecommunication facilities, communications software, and other network components.
  • Performs hands on installation and configuration for all network infrastructure as needed.
  • Supports customers in identifying problems with client endpoint connectivity, switches, routers, and other network components.
  • Creates and updates design, network specifications, and reference documentation.
  • Develops, designs, and implements a Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT) network. Creates project plans for network design, implementation, and upgrades/modifications to existing networks.
  • Manages the installation of network hardware, communications wiring, wireless telecommunication facilities, communications software, and other network components. Identifies problems with network components and services. Conducts trending and analysis of network traffic patterns and makes recommendations.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • College degree in information technology or related field.

Experience:
  • Professional experience in network operations and design.
  • Progressive experience network installation, configuration, and troubleshooting in an enterprise environment.
  • Specific experience in two more of the following areas: Firewalls, Routers, Switches, Wireless, and networking concepts such as ACL creation, VPNs, 802.1x, PKI, and identity-based access.
  • Experience using Cisco, Juniper, or Brocade routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Experience with TCP/IP networks including DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and firewalls.

Certifications:
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification or vendor equivalent.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the following: network topologies, common circuit types; wired and wireless routing protocols, network security concepts, VoIP, DNS, DHCP, current Cisco routers and switches, and network management and monitoring tools (Cisco Prime, Aruba Airwave, NetMRI, CA Spectrum, AKIPS).
  • An in-depth understanding of TCP/IP networking and related networking concepts.
  • Expert understanding of layer 2 and layer 3 (OSPF, BGP) configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Expert understanding of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP).
  • Familiarity with SNMP and its concepts.
  • Basic understanding of wireless network and technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of Python/Perl or related scripting language.
  • Basic understanding and use of UNIX commands.

Preferred Competencies
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in conveying technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Diagnose complex technical problems.
  • Work under general supervision.
  • Handle multiple tasks and substantial deadline pressure.

Working Conditions
  • Occasional irregular work schedule due to network changes or incidents.
  • Handle emergency situations outside of normal business hours.
