The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa is seeking a Java Application Developer. The person in this position is responsible for the development and support of Java based applications that support the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL)'s Newborn Screening Program. Responsibilities include development of n-Tier Java Applications, working with staff in the SHL's Newborn Screening program to gather requirements, and supporting program workflows.

This position will work closely with technical and functional partners to determine requirements and create comprehensive solutions using modern technologies. The individual in this position will be expected to enhance and support systems including the SHL's Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) OpenELIS.

This position will work alongside department senior technical staff to design, develop, implement, and support these solutions. This position is responsible for mission-critical enterprise applications and sensitive data, so attention to detail and quality are critical.

About the Unit
The State Hygienic Laboratory' s main facilities are headquartered on the University of Iowa's Research Park campus northwest of Iowa City in Coralville. Additional testing facilities are part of the Iowa Laboratory Facilities in Ankeny, a Des Moines suburb.

Since 1904, the State Hygienic Laboratory has been at the forefront of public health issues in Iowa. As the state's public health and environmental laboratory, the Hygienic Laboratory serves all of Iowa's 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening.

Qualifications:

Education or Equivalency Required

A Bachelor's degree in a STEM or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience (typically 3-5 years') developing large applications with some technical direction.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with:
    • J2EE/Jakarta EE applications.
    • JDBC.
    • Java based frameworks, protocols, and tools.
  • Software development best practices such as source code control, issue tracking, prototyping, testing, automated build and deployment, etc.
  • Relational database experience, including SQL.
  • Excellent communication and customer relations skills.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking, technical problem solving, and analyzing system specifications.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience using Java J2EE/Jakarta EE Application Servers.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with AJAX or GWT.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with modern Java frameworks.
  • Experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.
  • Understanding of security issues and defensive programming techniques.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and personal project management skills.
  • Knowledge of public health programs.
  • Ability to contribute to a successful team-oriented work environment.
