Job Summary/Basic Function:
Responsible for supervision and coordination of production requirements for University event venues. Provides event production expertise and oversight to users of the facility. Trains and supervises part-time temporary stagehands and student stagehands (Event Workers). Oversees safety procedures and the use of venues, vehicles and equipment.

Department Overview:
About the Morrison Center: Located on the campus of Boise State University, the 2,002-seat Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts is Idaho's home for the arts. Nestled on the banks of the Boise River, with a panoramic view of the city, parks, and foothills, the Center's 10-story stage house is a recognizable fixture of the Capitol's picturesque skyline. The realization of a life-long dream of Harry W. Morrison, and championed by his widow, Velma, the Center opened its doors on April 7, 1984.

Level Scope:
Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. Sets and delegates day-to-day tasks to achieve operational objectives. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or campus policies, procedures and defined internal controls. Problems typically involve a single area, process or constituent group. Ensures accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Essential Functions:
The Venue Services, Supervisor must:

  • The Assistant Production Manager augments the theatrical production team by assisting with the planning, setup, operation, and maintenance of theatrical productions, events, equipment, and labor under the general direction of the Director of Production.
  • As the liaison between the Production Management team and the house crew, the Assistant Production Manager assists with:
    • Scheduling and crew needs.
    • Preparing labor and equipment estimates for clients.

This position:
  • Directly supervises the head carpenter, head electrician, and head audio.
    Assists with supervisory support for production managers and departmental lead personnel.
    Assists with hiring and training full-time, temporary, and student staff.
  • Maintain venue and event production in a "ready-to-produce condition".
  • Oversight, coordination, and management of event production cycles (including facility preparation, event load-in, performance, event load-out and facility restoration).
  • Meet with users to determine requirements and reviews event information for accuracy. Plan and communicate and scheduling for needs and resources. Work to assure that all event requirements are fulfilled as expected.
  • Routine performance of technical skills and tasks related to theatrical stage systems and protocols for various public and private events, supervision of stage technicians and personnel in the above skills and tasks as assigned.
  • Assist in organizing and supervising work crews, stage technicians, and others as needed for show calls to meet specified event requirements. Work with Facility Foreman to maintain proper operation of HVAC systems.
  • Schedule, organize, delegate and supervise employees, facilitate conversions and projects; plan\work tasks and disseminate information as needed for show calls to meet specified event requirements. Assist with recruitment of student and temporary workers for stage productions.
  • Preparation of all hiring paperwork and timesheets. Monitor performance and prepare evaluations.
  • Design and improve work methods, tools, devices, etc., identifying potential problems, shortages, conflicts, etc.
  • Attend event planning and facility administration or operations meetings.
  • Liaise with campus and community organizations and productions as assigned
  • Prepare estimates and invoices for labor and equipment. Authorizes payments for event setup labor.
  • Respond to problems and fulfill requests for equipment, building, and utility access.
  • Perform or arrange for professional services to perform: preventative maintenance, troubleshooting failures, repairs, and installations
  • Design or reconfigure systems and acquire equipment to fulfill event requirements. Ensure that the tools and machines used by event staff are safe for use and are in a ready to use
  • Safety is one of the most critical aspects of the job, responsible for the overall safety of the building and patrons. A thorough understanding of proper procedures and best practices for working in a performance environment are critical in this job.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Good working knowledge of audio, video, mechanical rigging, equipment setup, operation, maintenance, and theatrical safety.
  • Possess leadership skills in hiring, scheduling, coordinator, supervising, and evaluating.
  • Knowledge of professional staging systems, hardware, and sources of supply.
  • Knowledge of rental sound/lighting rental.
  • Knowledge of contractor abilities: staging and production support.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, building code, and fire code.
  • Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations and resolve operational problems.
  • Knowledge of event production terms and techniques.
  • Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Posses or have the ability to obtain industry-recognized certification in stage rigging.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ownership of assigned tasks.
  • Punctuality, professionalism, and a positive, collaborative attitude when working with clients and co-workers.
  • Read stage layout specifications and blueprints, and execute drafting and associated paperwork for productions.
  • Availability and willingness to work extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Professional production experience in commercial theaters, or with touring productions.
  • Considerable experience with additional production disciplines such as audio, video, rigging, and fabrication.

The salary starts at $49,025 annually.
