Description:
Prepares patients for office visits; performs tasks including escorting patient to treatment room, obtaining pertinent patient information for medical record, and documenting information in patients' chart. Processes patient telephone calls and correspondence for the practice. Organizes and prioritizes duties to optimize efficiency and promote positive patient outcomes. Scribes information on a regular basis.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
1. Coordinates patient flow in the office. Collaborates with receptionist to make certain that patients are seen in a timely and efficient manner. Assists front office personnel by answering the telephone, scheduling patient appointments, and other tasks as needed.
2. Obtains pertinent history and enters into the medical record including chief complaint, medical and surgical history, allergies, medications, and appropriate review of systems. In treatment rooms, serves as a scribe between patient and physician, documenting all relevant information.
3. Ensures patient is given appropriate clothing in preparation for the expected physical exam.
4. Triages patient telephone calls for lab results, prescription refills, and other clinical matters based on physician clinical pathways.
5. Processes and files all lab/diagnostic test results, correspondence, clinical notes in patients' chart after they have been reviewed by the physician. Assures accurate and complete documentation on patient records and notifies providers and other departments of diagnostic testing results.
6. Maintains and organizes patient files in accordance with HIPPA and JCAHO regulation.
7. Monitors inventory and restocks supplies as necessary.
8. Provides age-specific care related to patient's unique physical and psychosocial needs.
9. Works with the physicians to ensure completion of medical necessity forms, disability applications, and insurance-related documents.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Excellent communication and people skills. Customer/patient service orientated.
2. Knowledge of medical assisting normally associated with obtaining an Associate's Degree in Medical Assistance is preferred. National Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
3. Minimum of six (6) months of related work experience is required.
4. Work requires the ability to gather and interpret data in situations where the information or problems are not overly difficult or complex. Work requires the ability to multi-task.
5. Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters; schedule appointments, assess and record vital signs in patient's chart, explain policies and procedures, and relay patients' need to appropriate personnel. This type of interaction requires courtesy and tact when dealing with patients and their families and /or health care system employees.
6. Work requires providing direct patient care to adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Some minor physical inconvenience or discomfort routinely present in the work situation or occasional exposure to minor injury or other occupational hazards requiring Universal Precautions.
2. Nature of the work requires considerable or heavy workload, some irregularity in scheduled hours and there may be potential stress due to periodic or cyclical workload pressures.
3. Physical effort as in lifting, pulling, or pushing a load of 50 pounds may be required on an inconsistent basis.
4. Exposure to blood and various body fluids requires caution and use of established safety guidelines and equipment using Universal Precautions.

1. Has no responsibility supervising or leading others.
