The Maintenance Planner is a critical role within the Maintenance organization that collects, organizes and documents the work order steps with resources, tools and materials to safely and effectively execute maintenance scope of work to improve equipment availability and improve maintenance cost efficiency (time to repair + quality of repair = lower maintenance costs).

The Maintenance Planner facilitates maintenance productivity (ability to schedule effectively, quality of workmanship, utilization of labor, materials and services) to ensure safe and quality work execution through clear Work Order development that utilizes current knowledge/documentation and improves documentation for future use.

Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate the maintenance organization activities as related to the Work Management Process
    1. Planning - Align with Maintenance Coordinator and Maintenance Supervisor on priority and work scope to propose job plans, required materials and services vs. availability to meet production schedule for agreement on schedule adjustment or expediting options
    2. Preparation - Track materials, services, and special tool availability to facilitate and synchronize the maintenance and production schedule integration
    3. Coordination - Coordinate and communicate the details of materials, services, and tools to optimize the Plan Execution phase.
    4. Accomplishment - Facilitate alignment on questions and concerns around the plan (example- procedure, material, and special tool concerns)
    5. Documentation - Collect documentation improvement opportunities for review and approval with the Reliability Improvement Team and facilitate the unused material return process
  1. Support the Reliability Management Process through continuous improvement of asset and organizational Master Data quality and documentation
    1. For existing equipment, initiate updates or creation of documentation (Master Data, Procedures, P&IDs, etc.) based on gaps identified from planning and execution of work orders
    2. For new equipment, audit project documentation packages for completeness and ensure that they meet appropriate standards for documentation and master data
    3. Recommend upgrades to master data and documentation standards


  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Good communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Ability to develop and excel in a team environment
  • Time management and prioritization skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to execute with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of and experience with Site safety policies, procedures, and training as required
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Maintenance Work Management Process (WMP) and its impact upon asset reliability
  • Knowledge of and experience with and have ability to access Maintenance policies, procedures, and maintenance training as required
  • Understanding of Management of Change Technology (MOC-T) and Management of Change of Facilities (MOC-F) and how they relate to the Planning process
  • Knowledge of and experience with other software tools as appropriate; Microsoft® Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)
  • Good interpersonal and Conflict Resolution Skills with the ability to influence managers, peers, and maintenance team
  • Knowledge of production process (chemicals, hazards, and unit operations)
  • Knowledge of the production/utility equipment and the impact on production process
  • Knowledge of Predictive Maintenance techniques (examples- steam trap testing, oil analysis, etc.)
  • Knowledge of equipment hazards, failure modes, and the complexity of various maintenance restoration techniques; to effectively build the necessary time, skills, tools, materials, activities and sequence required to execute the scope of work into the work order in a way that facilitates the scheduling process
  • Knowledge of first break and lock out requirements
  • Knowledge of Engineering Standards as applied to Pipe and Valve Codes
  • Ability to translate written repair procedures into task lists or Work Orders and Shop papers (job packages) to facilitate effective scheduling
  • Ability to interpret drawings to create quality work order structure (planning) and create sketches for communication to mechanics as part of work execution package
  • Knowledge of and experience with creating field isometric drawings of piping systems for mechanics as part of work execution package
  • Knowledge of and experience with the creation of the material master data descriptions to ensure that the material meets the usage requirements
