The Maintenance Manager leads a team of maintenance technicians at Ice Cream Specialties, a division of Prairie Farms, in Lafayette, to ensure all equipment remains operational and directs proactive work on equipment. They will also oversee and manage all training and staffing needs for the team.

Ice Cream Specialties, a division of Prairie Farms, produces ice cream novelties for external customers (or private label customers), as well as our own brand, North Star. This Lafayette branch distributes products such as: ice cream cones, popsicles, fudge bars, ice cream bars, doggie sundaes, and ice cream sandwiches, as well as multi-packs for large "club" distributors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Manager is responsible for assisting in providing safe operations of the department and staff.
  • Assists in keeping production lines running with minimal downtime by providing support to establishment.
  • Assists in directing the department effectively by having knowledge and understanding of the equipment, process and maintenance department structure.
  • Staff training, regulatory compliance, computerized maintenance management system, spare parts inventory, and expenses for the department.
  • Allocate their time and department resources to assist engineering projects.
  • Support food safety programs as well as environmental health and safety programs.
  • Provide for the well-being, training and leadership of the maintenance team.
  • Responsible for Resources/Support to Production, Operations, Cap X Projects and Regulatory Compliance, Planning, Budgeting and Project Management, Safety, Maintenance Department Scheduling & Management
  • Challenges, Day to Day; support the business priorities that are constantly changing.
  • Direction is given to tactically utilize resources to reach best possible outcome of circumstances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong influences to the maintenance staff to give their best effort and work together as a team in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and assist with formal performance evaluations.
  • Evaluate staff for training needs by providing and participating with them in challenging tasks.
  • Assist in direct report in career goals and seeking opportunities for development.
  • Completion of yearly training goals and resources required for direct reports to perform their roles.
  • Listens to the staff's concerns, and then follows through appropriately.
  • Manages the planning and assignment of work orders for the maintenance department staff.
  • Defines and updates job descriptions for direct reports.
  • Manages staff attendance and department payroll inputs.

Expected Goals and Outcomes:

  • Responds to breakdown trouble calls to lend leadership and assistance.
  • Work side by side on plant activities with staff to promote team spirit.
  • Available at all hours by telephone to respond to breakdowns or other plant emergencies.
  • Responds to major breakdowns or other emergencies at all hours by going to plant if not already on site.
  • Manages and assigns work orders as required to maintain plant PM programs.
  • Maintains and Administers the PSM program related to the ammonia refrigeration system.
  • Maintains and administers records and programs related the EPA regulations and Waste Water Management Regulations.
  • Maintains records and conducts staff training necessary to meet regulatory compliance in all areas.

Statistical Data:

  • Department Budget maintaining and revising as needed.
  • Project Management Design, Layout, and ability to see through obstacles and find solutions to problems.
  • Review of Maintenance data and improve overall effectiveness of program.
  • Understanding of rebate programs and available outside resources.
  • Manages/Orders/Oversee all parts necessary to maintain proper inventory level for plant operations.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Vocational, technical education in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of management experience required in a either Bakery or Food manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and needs.
  • Ammonia/Refrigeration Knowledge of PSM, Two Stage/ compound single stage systems is helpful.
  • Experienced with environmental processes, such as Waste Water Sanitation, OSHA, EPA, Hazardous Communication, Safety Lock Out & Tag Out, Fire Dept. Regulations, these are just a few that if preferred. Meeting all governmentally mandated criteria necessary to continue plant operations.
  • Must have a wide range of electrical/ mechanical knowledge (including PLC) Have the ability to troubleshoot electro-mechanical devices, troubleshoot failures and implement repairs. Must have a broad base knowledge of electric motors, belt, chain and gear drives, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and HVAC systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Specific Job-related PC experience skills.
  • Familiarity with CMMS software is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to nurture and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Sense of urgency, ownership and accountability regarding roles and the needs of the department.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete daily activities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull products weighing up to fifty pounds and occasionally having to lift product overhead.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, climb ladders, and other physical requirements as needed.
  • Must be able to pass post-offer pre-employment screenings.
