Description

The Knowledge Access and Resource Management Department in Libraries at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Library Associate-Metadata.

About the Opportunity:

This position will provide support in the creation of MARC metadata in the library management system, and in the organization, implementation, and completion of various database maintenance projects.

What you’ll do:

Metadata Creation (70%).
  • Identifies records for library use in the OCLC cooperative bibliographic database.
  • Performs original and descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, and classification under the direction of the Head of Metadata or metadata librarians when records aren’t available in the OCLC cooperative bibliographic database.
  • Updates records in the OCLC cooperative bibliographic database as necessary to meet national cataloging standards as determined by subject specialists and metadata librarians.
  • Derives serial records in the OCLC cooperative bibliographic database as necessary to correctly identify unique serial items.
  • Serves as a resource to assigned student assistants on metadata entry.
  • Creates and sets holdings as needed within library management system.
  • Communicates with library stakeholders about the progress of projects and backlogs or local procedures and practices.
Metadata Creation for Digital Projects (20%).
  • Creates metadata for digital projects as determined by subject specialist and metadata librarians.
  • Provides training to student assistants in the input of metadata for digital projects.
  • Works independently to execute project tasks in a timely manner, meeting task due dates and project milestones.
  • Participates in project initiation and planning activities to understand project specifications, tasks, and milestones.
Library Operations (10%).
  • Supervises student assistants as needed.
  • Completes physical processing of library materials.
  • Provides statistics for annual reporting.
  • Assist in Departmental projects as assigned.
  • Participates in departmental and library wide meetings and training sessions.
  • Analyzes library, department, and unit needs and makes recommendations to improve workflows and projects or enhance access to materials.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Library experience (6 months or more) in any library environment (public, academic, school, etc.)
  • Experience using an Integrated Library System.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Strong organizational skill.
    • Ability to solve complex problems independently.
    • Basic knowledge of discovery systems.
  • Attributes:
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build rapport with team members.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and patrons.
    • Good professional attitude.
    • Ability to organize work in an effective manner for easy recall of status.
