General Statement of Job:
The Librarian I - Public Services provides reference and instruction services to students, faculty, staff, and community users; and develops, promotes, implements, maintains, and helps evaluate library programs and services.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides reference and consultation services in person, by phone, and through the use of virtual reference technology.
  2. Provides library instruction in accordance with the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) guidelines for academic libraries, in both face-to-face and online teaching environments.
  3. Assists in developing, implementing, and assessing library instruction services.
  4. Serves as library liaison to assigned academic departments.
  5. Participates in collection development activities.
  6. Creates and maintains course and subject guides and related subject-specific electronic resources.
  7. Assists in developing and maintaining library webpage and social media content as assigned.
  8. Assists and trains library patrons in the utilization of the library’s online resources.
  9. Assists in developing and maintaining online collections and services.
  10. Assists with library programming.
  11. Assists with circulation services, as needed.
  12. Assists in training and supervising Library Public Services Direct-Wage and Classified staff.
  13. Assists in maintaining current, accurate departmental files and records and procedures manuals.
  14. Maintains a professional knowledge of library and information science; keeps current on developments of specific job-related fields.
  15. Participates in a variety of committees as assigned.
  16. Builds and maintains excellent public/working relationships with coworkers, students, faculty and staff.
  17. Travels throughout the college district, as needed.
  18. Is able and equipped to complete typical tasks remotely as needed.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. Master’s degree in Library Science and/or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program required.
  2. At least two (2) years of demonstrated library instruction experience in face-to-face and/or online classrooms, preferred.
  3. Recent academic library experience, preferred.

  1. Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. In addition, subject to a federal background check.
  3. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.
